I generally only take the boys out of school for Dr appointments. They do usually miss a day of school on our annual camping trip because school starts the week before Labor day so they miss a day for that usually.
I did have to send them home on the normal bus one day instead of staying for after school because they where having a family night at the school and a PTO meeting and if they stayed for after school and got sent home on that bus they wouldn't have gotten home until the meeting start time.

I guess I would take it as it came. If we set up a vacation I would try to schedule it around school, but sometimes you can't. I would also try to schedule doctor appts. at the very beginning or end of the day so the least amount of school is missed. Everyone has their own opinions of school though. I feel that it's important. If my child were exceptional at a sport and had a private lesson and I couldn't get the coach to change the time, I would pull them once or twice, not a continual thing.
Growing up I never missed unless I was sick. I faked it once, my dad didn't question me and just told me to stay home. It was SO boring! All my friends were at school so I had nothing to do (small town). That's the day I learned it was more fun to be at school than to miss it.
