Once again Sharon, your article was beautifully written! This one was obviously more difficult for me to understand than your first one, only because I know so little about Judaism. However, I could feel the love and passion that you have for your religion...it's beautiful!

Thank you Claire. Yeah, it would be hard to understand. A tallit is a prayer shawl - that's a picture of one accompanying the article. They are worn during certain prayer services by Jewish adults. As you gathered, it used to be only males wear them and now many women do, too. It's a big part of the rite of passage or Bar or Bat Mitzvah, which is when religiously a Jew becomes an "adult" at 13. The person, as part of the ceremony, receives their tallit and wears it for the first time.

tcjewfolk.com/protecting-soul-child-hillel/I have a new piece up. This one is actually quite accessible to non-Jews, much more so than the other two. The one thing to know is that Hillel is a very well-known and much quoted rabbi from about 2,000 years ago. One of his most famous quotes is: If I am not for myself who will be for me? If I am only for myself what am I? If not now when? You can read some basics about him here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillel_the_Elder

Beautifully written. Your son has a lot to be proud of with you and Tina as his moms. You really are doing an excellent job IMO of handling a very difficult situation.
I will take to heart the teachings of Hillel you quoted. Those are important reminders in life.

Thank you Dara. We've got a long way to go to November, and then possibly dealing with the aftermath if it passes and causes a whole new level of grief for him, but I feel like we are working to stay on message. Now if I could just find someone who would print his second letter - that's his current goal.
