I think it's crap... we have a legal age to drink for a reason. This is just giving irresponsible teenagers the priveledge of making our roads more dangerous...Are these restaurants going to provide taxis for all of these kids?
combine legalized underaged teenage drinking, with cell phone use and I think that the death statistics for teens driving under the influence is going to RISE!

I agree, total crap. My first thought was the driving issue..its a scary thought. My second thought was my dates with DH would be ruined by immature drunk teens. Ha.

I disagree with the 16 and with a parent part... but agree to lowering the drinking age to 18. There are just as many "responsible adults" that drink and drive... 30, 40, 50 year olds that should really know better. I really don't think lowering the age will cause that stat to rise significantly. You can vote at 18, join the military, get married, buy tobacco, sign legal paperwork, buy a house, etc... If you become an adult and are able to have all of these rights at age 18, then you should have the privilege of being able to have a beer or glass of wine with dinner.

As my friends have said, if you are old enough to die for our country, you should be old enough to enjoy a beer.

I've always thought the drinking age should be 18. As mentioned above, if you can vote and fight for your country at 18, why can you not enjoy a beer when you come home? In Europe the drinking age is 18, and the amount of drunk driving accidents over there is overwhelmingly lower. People learn how to drink responsibly because it isn't so taboo. On the flip side, I've always thought that getting your license at 16 is ridiculously young!

If the law said that they were only have ONE glass of wine or ONE glass of beer with dinner, then fine.. but do people really think that an 18 yr old is going to go out to the bar or a restaurant and have just ONE drink? I think not.

I think it'll be a never ending debate just like cell phone use in the car, and what age teens should be able to drive... my opinions tend to fare on the way of safety... no underage drinking, no cellphone use in the car unless it's completely hands free; and even then I don't agree with it.... the driving age should be 16 or 17.... and there should be a motorcycle helmet law.
But I'm from a state that has these things already, so it's just weird to me when things like this new bill come up... and safety isn't the number one concern... the consequences.

Well if it's going to be ONE glass of beer, or ONE glass of wine for 18 yr olds, then it needs to be the same for people of ALL ages. I'm sorry but whenever you hear of alcohol related accidents on the news, more times than not they are older adults, with MULTIPLE incidents of alcohol related offenses...NOT 18 year olds.

I have a hard time with this because I tend to agree that if someone is old enough to fight for our country, vote, etc. they should be able to have a beer.
On the other hand, when I was 18 I was nowhere near mature enough to be going out to the bar, and I'm more mature than most of my friends. I used to drink & drive when I was underage, luckily I never hurt myself or anyone else. But had I been able to drink at the bar I don't know that I would have been so lucky.
There is A LOT of maturing that happens between 18 and 21.

When I think of 18 yr olds drinking I think of how stupid my friends and I were & how stupid my brother and his friends were..... but really how stupid a lot of people I knew who underage drank were. Maybe instead of the 16 and drink at home with parents it should be 18 and at home. I just honestly don't think teens are mature enough to go out drinking to bars and what not.

I can understand the safety concerns. I still feel that we, as parents, should teach our kids to be responsible about drinking. I am not a big drinker nor is DH, and alcohol interacts funny with our medications.
I personally would like to teach my kids in a safe and legal way that drinking isn't a big deal. My parents were laid back about it, and would let either my sister or I have a little taste (we usually thought it was gross). My dad started making his own beer when I was a teen, and he burnt the malt/hops. Oh boy did it stink. For the longest time all beer tasted like burnt malt/hops.

There is plenty of research that shows that the younger a person is when they start using alcohol the higher the risk of addiction. So I don't think they should increase the legal drinking age. Military or not.

I agree completely with Megan on this one. I don't see why there is any reason why the legal drinking age isn't 18yo. I do not agree witht he part of the 16yo being able to drink with a parent present....that can open up a whole lot of problems. I know because I had one of those parents that bought me alcohol at 16yo and she didn't care how often or how much I was doing it.
