As I am looking at the picture above, to me it doesn't look like that seat is in correctly. How can the seat be in the right way if it is 2 inches from the back fo the other seat, how is there that gap between the carseat and the seat, shouldn't the carseat go all the way to the crack of the seat so you can get the straps nice at tight? It just doesn't look right to me.

Good point. Maybe there is a spacer in there like other countries use.

It's a UK seat. Tina says there is something at the bottom of the pic that says so.

Cissy, from what I see in the picture the base of the carseat curves to hug the front of the seat and there is a spacer thing between the base and the back of the seat. I would love to see one of these in person to see how it secures! It's a cool seat, I have to say, if I had that seat for my girls I'd have left them rear-facing longer.

This is common practice in some other countries - not legal here yet, unfortunately.

Sharon, do you have any info and visuals you can share on extended harnessing? I still have my 6 year harnessed and I don't am not ready to allow her to sit in a backless booster with a shoulder/lap belt BUT I see people putting their just turned 3 year olds in backless boosters! I would love some concrete evidence to show them other than me just saying, "It's safer to keep them in a harness as long as possible." Thanks! (Of course this should be a separate thread.)

A highback booster should come in before a backless booster. I'll see what Tina has.
I think a lot of it is just the wrong thinking - people are in a hurry to get to the next step thinking of it as a positive move. It's the opposite - a move "up" to the next kind of car seat is providing less safety. It's a move backward. Eventually you have to do it, but to hurry and do it early is only a detriment to the safety of your kid.

I kept DS rearfacing until he was almost 2. It drives me crazy when people think that they can front face their child just because its their first birthday. Like its a big milestone they need to celebrate regardless of the childs weight.
The thing I've seen with most UK seats though is that most do not have the chest clip, they are just a 3 point harness instead of the 5 that we use here.
I wish more people would take the time to read their carseat's manual and educate themselves on what is important for their child's safety. One of my biggest pet peeves is when parents post pictures of their children on facebook with them not properly strapped in to their seats. I've got a pretty bad example I'll try to find to share...

Yeah I worry about them enough when I am driving...it relaxes me a little knowing they are strapped in so well! My kids are big for their ages but I want to keep ds1 in a high back booster until at least 5.

I love, love, love www.car-seat.org for car seat questions. It's full of techs who, collectively, know everything about car seats and cars. If you tell them what kind of car you drive and your child's height and weight, they'll give you the best seat recommendations to suit you! My kids are rear-facing at ages 2.5 and 4.5 years. I like the Graco MyRide65. It rear-faces to 40 lbs and forward faces to 65lbs. The seat is more reclined so we have our longer-legged kid in that seat; his legs are too squished in our other rear-facing seat. He usually props his legs up on the seat behind him to stretch out!
