I love all these ideas too! I really need to buckle down and get moving too. I want to get zumba for Kinect for my bday or Christmas. We also can't afford a gym membership. We made the switch to whole grains a while ago. There are many whole grain pastas out there now and we only use brown rice. I also bake with whole wheat flour. There are a few things we don't use it for like cookies or certain cakes. Works wonderfully for banana bread. Cub started having their own brand of whole wheat pastas and frequently have them on sale for 10 for $10.

theres a newer fitness center... xperience fitness... theres lots of locations around the metro... blaine, woodbury, vadnais heights and some others. 9.99 a month. NO contract. I think 24 hours. childcare. a women's area. group classes. a POOL! My hubby wants to drop the one he has with 24 hour fitness and go to this one. 10 is pretty affordable in comparison with a lot of others!

If you like treasure hunting, go GeoCaching: www.geocaching.com/It really makes you get steps in and for me it's family time because I do it with my mother. It doesn't feel like exercise because you're hunting for "treasure". It also makes you think because they can be hiding anywhere, we've so far found them in trees and in the bases of lights in parking lots and under rocks. They could be anywhere.... many times in places you look at every day. I found one in the parking lot of Kohl's in Coon Rapids a couple of weeks ago. Just an idea to get moving and it's free.

Having gone thru what your DD is going thru I can say the only way to not make her feel worse right now is to drop the subject. You can however, change the way the entire family eats. Get rid of the junk food in the house, eat a high protein low carb diet and introduce exercise back to the whole family.
I know breakfast can be the down fall of any healthy eating program. One of my favorites is mini crustless quiche's. I put either sausage, bacon or ham in the bottom of a muffin tin, add some finely chopped veggies and cheese then pour scrambled up eggs over to fill the tin to about 3/4 full. Bake until done. Once cooled I'll put them in ziplock bags or another dish and put in the fridge. The will last 1-2 weeks and are easy to grab toss in the microwave and eat on the go.
Another big downfall is what you may be drinking. Soda, hot cocoa etc, are really bad. even diet soda. The fake sugars mask and actually make you feel more hungry as the day goes on.
Good Luck to your whole family.

Write down what you are eating then look at it.

Mom says, "Honey, I need a walking partner. Grab your shoes and let's go right now." Daughter groans, mom says, "I'm serious, let's go." Then on your walk talk about getting in shape together by exercising and eating better. Come up with a plan together. Good luck!

I talked to her yesterday about this. I told her I'm going to get healthier snacks, nuts, pretzels, cut up cauliflower, etc. I don't think DD is going to be the problem. I think it's going to be DH who's the biggest whiner!

That's a good idea, too! I know we just really need to get her moving, well, all of us moving, and def make better food choices. DH has such a sweet tooth and it's so not good for him since he's diabetic.

I like the Zumba idea good for teens!
LC you have mentioned before that she was depressed right? Is she on anti-depressats? If so some of them can make you gain weight so it's not really her fault.
There are these cookbooks I want to get called Eat What You Love. There are two books and they are fairly inexpensive at Walmart. It is a dibetics cookbook but even there punch receipt has way less calories then the stuff you buy in the store. The receipts look fairly easy. The only problem is most of them substitute Splenda for sugar. I personally won't be doing that when I order them because I think I have an allergy to artifical sugar.

Oh you could also try that Carnation instant breakfast or smoothies for in the morning!

I would do smoothies rather than any packet thing (or from a can) as they still have a lot of sugar in them. It's easy to put together a smoothie if you have a good blender. Just some frozen or fresh fruit and some yogurt does the trick. (I use Greek yogurt, higher in protein and if you do plain yogurt, it has no sugar!)
Of course I'm a little weird wanting to have a lot of control over the ingredients that go into my body the majority of the time.
Perhaps the two of you can take a nutrition class together or see a nutritionist? Of course if you could bring the husband along, that would be even better.

some companies offer the use of a nutritionist as a perk or at a discount... we just got something in the mail that UHG would send both of us at no cost.
