Yes! Talk to the neighbors. You will find out a lot about the neighborhood and possibly about the house you're buying. Ask them about their neighbors, you'll get a feel for the neighborhood and who is the "problem neighbor" and hopefully they're not in the house next to the one you're thinking of buying.
(No, I don't own, but my Mom has given me a lot of advice.)

The online sites I enjoy purusing are Zillow and Realtor. They are both really easy to use and have nice amounts of info on the properties. I used to love Trulia but they seem to have virus issues.

Well, we love it down in St. Paul Park and Pullman Elementary is excellent! We moved down here because you can get alot more bang for the buck and it's like living in a small community even though you have everything close by. Good Luck on the house search.

Gwen, do you have any issues with the refinery at all? I did see some cute houses online in that area!

No, and we have lived within 4-6 blocks of the refinery since we moved down there. Every once in a while you will get the "smell" but it's not bad and not very often. We've lived down there since 2000 and live about 4 blocks from the refinery when it was hit by lightining and one of the tanks exploded. We got a load bang but no damage or inconvience from it. We do live only a block from the RR Tracks and those are used alot, but, we love trains at our house so we enjoy seeing them all the time. For the most part we don't even hear the trains anymore.
Disclosure - I'm on the PTA board at Pullman Elementary - However Pullman is an excellent school that has come along way. Currently it is one of the top elementary schools in the district when it cam to the results or the MCA testing.
