This is kind of an update to a previous post....Has anyone here had or know someone who has had radioactive iodine therapy for their thyroid? It’s a form of radiation that over time kills your thyroid and then you are on synthetic thyroid meds for the rest of your life.
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism/Graves’ disease a few months ago. I tried a medication that was supposed to correct it, but I had an apparent allergic reaction to it after three weeks, so I had to stop taking it. I think my next option is the radiation but it scares me. I hate making decisions that are final and irreversible. And it’s even worse when it’s part of my body! I’ve read both good and bad things on online forums, but those are people I don’t know. Not that I know all of you, but you gals feel closer than some random people in a medical forum. For some people they find the right dose right away and they’re fine, sounds like for others it can take awhile to get balanced out and their weight, etc. continually fluctuates.
I’m pretty confused and stressed about this. I’m supposed to have an appointment with my endocrinologist coming up, but I’m pretty sure she’s going to tell me the next step is either radiation or surgery. I’m in my 30s and feel like that’s a lot of life left to live without a thyroid. Ugh....
