Sunday night (Mother's Day) I experienced severe severe pain on my left side between my lower ribs and hip/pelvis bone. I crawled around and eventually called triage nurse t the hospital. They had strongly urged my to go to ER, but with limited money in health savings account-- I waited until next day and had 2pm appt. I was there over 4 hours. I had blood tests and eventually a CT scan--which gave no results. After I got home, I finally got call from doctor that I have 3cm cyst on my ovary. I guess this is not that unusual for my age at mid-cycle. Does anyone else experience these? What helps and what doesn't? I have a friend whose daughter has multiple cysts on both ovaries since high school (she is 20 now). I have twinges now, I was prescribed pain med (haven't needed since I got it). My doctor is supposed to follow up with me, but I haven't heard from her yet (I called twice yesterday).

I had them years ago and they put me on BC. Took care of it. Are you on birth control now?

Deanne, I'm sorry to hear this. UGH. I had a cyst the size of a softball on my left ovary and ended up having the ovary, fallopian tube + cyst all taken out last fall. I was really lucky in that I never felt a thing, no pain--but the down side was they had to take it out and make sure it wasn't cancerous (thank the Lord it was not).
They also mentioned to me that I may choose to go on BC pills at some point to try to prevent them down the road on my remaining ovary--I never had cysts until I went off the pill (got an IUD a few years ago).

I went off the pill a few months after DS was born (I was 38) and DS is 5 now. Never had them before. Doctor said I should go in for ultrasound at 6-8 weeks-- radiology called and already have it scheduled. I hope I don't have to go through that pain again.

From my understanding of going through endometriosis and surgery for that, cysts will only develop if you are ovulating. So you can still be on the pill and ovulate, therefor creating those cysts. My doctor has me on a full, non-stop dosage of BC pills to prevent me from getting my period at all so that my endometriosis doesn't come back. I don't know if cysts are somehow related, or follow that same kind of "rule" if you will, but it may be worth asking. I have also had multiple doctors tell me that cysts are normal, and should not be painful. If there is pain, it's definitely worth making sure EVERYTHING gets looked at.
I'm sorry you're going through this. I know the pain, quite literally. Take care of yourself. Make sure you're getting all of your answers from your doctor, and if you don't feel like you're getting the right answers, get a second opinion. If you need a really good referral for a doctor, PM me.
