My youngest was 3 yrs old when he was potty trained, we used the timer every 15 minutes or so and did a little reward chart with stickers. When he peed/pooped in the potty, we made a huge deal out of it to show him how awesome that was! We also did away with the pull ups during the day in our potty training days, underwear it was, he had an accident twice in his underwear, did not like how that felt and it didn't happen again. We did use pull ups at night and I'd wake him up a few times a night to see if he could get some potty out and he would, shortly after he was waking up dry.
My oldest son was some hard work, but he also has Autism and he was nearly 5 years old before he was potty trained. My oldest son does not like to stand up and pee, so we just let him sit down and do his business, here is 10 years old and still prefers to pee sitting down. But he's had some issues not emptying out all the way so we've encouraged him to stand and pee. That is an ongoing battle.
