I've been noticing every year that Thanksgiving has been slowly getting phased out by the next big holiday Christmas. With Thanksgiving being the Only holiday that is universally American, I don't see why it should be overshadowed by Christmas. This year some stores will be opening on Thanksgiving that didn't normally before.
Now remember, Christmas is only celebrated by Christians. This country is a melting pot of different religions and I haven't noticed anything other than Christmas (and perhaps halloween, dang candy companies) being so promoted as a buy everything holiday. I don't notice any other religion being pushed so hard by the toy/candy/card companies as Christmas. Heck, Christmas stuff is being put up simultaneously with Halloween items.
I haven't even been able to find nice Thanksgiving items in the store. There are few turkeys or pilgrim knick knacks on the store shelves, if they're there, they are on clearance with the Halloween items or hidden in a corner behind the Christmas trees.
I suppose it's just me, but Christmas has gone way too overboard for me. I want Thanksgiving back as a family holiday- no Christmas Music, no Christmas Decorations, No Santa until the day After Thanksgiving! Seems that there isn't a holiday between Halloween and Christmas...

I do agree that Thanksgiving is slowly getting phased out, and it does bother me too. However, Christmas is not only celebrated by Christians. I know many, many people who are not religious at all and they still celebrate Christmas for the tradition and family time.
But I'm with you that I would like Thanksgiving back, as JUST Thanksgiving without all the Christmas music, decorations etc. It has just become so materialized and it isn't even about the actual holiday anymore. It's about the stores making money.

I agree....it's so silly how stores PUSH AND PUSH AND PUSH for xmas stuff to be sold. Like people wouldn't buy the items if they were put on the shelf a month later.

Exactly! Remember when WLTE would sprinkle Christmas music in their line up and then at 3pm on Christmas Eve it was all Christmas music. Now it starts, um, now? Is it playing now? This is how people get de-Christmatized and numb to it. It's shoved down our throats by the 1st of October.

The music started a couple of weeks ago according to my mother. She mentioned it was on one of her stations then. Before Halloween is way too early!

Yeah I've heard Christmas music already too.. Our tradition has always been to set up and "start" Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.

We do not decorate for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving. We do however go to the stores multiple times to see all the Christmas stuff, we tend to get there the day it goes on display, the kids love hitting the buttons and they love the music and the lights and the blow ups and the trees and I gotta say we were at Walmart 2 nights ago and I walked into the Christmas stuff and it smelt wonderful!

I LOVE Thanksgiving....I hate that they just skip over it likes its nothing now. DD1 doesn't even know theres another holiday before Christmas because of all the Christmas decor thats up...she thinks Santa is coming soon even though I try to correct her.

I miss Thanksgiving too. I refuse to watch any Christmas movies, put up decorations or listen to music until after thanksgiving. I also ignore stuff on the shelves. I will buy gifts if I find a good deal though. Christmas is definitely overkill in the stores and I wish they would stop. I am so glad I am not working retail right now. I think part of the reason though is that people "celebrate" the season of Christmas a lot longer...while Thanksgiving is just one day.

I am not going to lie. I am putting my lights up this weekend! Why? Because I won't have to freeze my behind off to do it later.

I put up my outside stuff before Thanksgiving cuz like Jazzy I don't want to freeze my butt off later. I don't turn them on until Thanksgiving night though.
Another reason why I decorate for Fall/Thanksgiving so my girls remember what Thanksgiving is! Thrift stores are awesome for finding Fall/Thanksgiving decor. I have a ton of Thanksgiving books too!

I know I think it is crazy!!! I hate hate hate that they are opening all these stores so early. People are starting to not think about spending time about family but about what time they need to get in line for at these stores. I am not happy about all this, next thing we know it they will be starting the sales on Thanksgiving morning
