Do you usually let your child depending on their age put sunscreen on themselves? Or do you put it on them?
I ask b/c I trusted my kids to put on their own sunscreen which I shouldn't have. They both got burnt on their face uner their eyes and on their shoulders, my dd got a red stripe on her forehead. So I learned a big lesson to put it on them myself. Oh ya, I got a little burnt too.
Live & learn the hard way sometimes. Ds's sunburn on his one shoulder blistered yesterday. Youch! We keep putting aloe on their sunburn. The burn on their faces looks good now. Only lasted one night on the face thank goodness.
TIA

Nope. I put the sunscreen on them at least until they were teens OR if they were somewhere without me. It's too easy to miss spots. I always miss spots on myself too. At 22 and 19, I STILL ask if they missed any spots and double check if I'm around. Those darn sunburns hurt! I remember from being a little kid who had too many sunburns.

You would have thought I would have learned my lesson b/c I have been sunburnt too many times.

I do it myself whenever possible... there's no reason a child should get a sunburn.

I do it myself. DS1 is 7 1/2 and DS2 is still to little for sunscreen so he has to stay in the shade.
Vitamin E works great for sunburn. Just pop the capsule and put it on. It makes a huge mess but it takes the burn out within 24 hours.

I let DD do it her self (she's 7) but I do watch to make sure she's putting on enough, and getting it everywhere it should be. She hasn't missed a spot this summer yet! *knock on wood*

I will be helping my kids put it on from now on. I am not sure why I didn't do it last time.
Gwen thanks for the idea of the vitamin E idea. Might have to try that.

My kids are 7 and 4. I've started letting the 7YO put sunscreen on her legs and arms while I do her face, ears, neck, and back. The 4YO wants to do it herself so I let her put sunscreen on her arms and legs and then I do it again just to make sure (plus the rest of her exposed skin). I'm more relaxed if we're not going to be outside for very long--say 30 minutes or so--but if it's any longer than that I'm pretty strict about it. If they complain I explain that the sun can cause burns that really hurt, so whether or not they like it I've got to make sure they're covered!!

I will put it on DS until he is well into his teens, it is too tricky to put on by yourself even as an adult (I just got burned last week from missing spots) so really I feel like everyone needs help.

I even had a stranger put it on me when we were at the beach party last Friday.

By the way it was a spray I had the stranger use. Ds was already in the water when I needed mine on.

DD1 is 7 and she just started putting it on herself. I get her shoulders, back, and face though to make sure she is covered evenly. She puts a TON on her arms and legs, so I don't worry about that. DD2 I put hers on, as she has a reaction if it gets near her face, so I don't even want it on her hands in case she would touch her face.
