So me, my kiddos & a friend of mine are going on a road trip to Colorado in about 2 weeks to see my best friend!! SOOOOOO STOKED!!! ;D Best part... My best friend is getting married AND her birthday is the day before that and she has NO idea we're coming! Her soon to be hubby is even in on it too. Hehe. Ahhhh OMG I'm so freaking excited!!! But anyways lol I was wondering if you ladies have any tips on taking kids on a road trip? DS is 6 months and DD is 5. I've been on a road trip once before but I didn't have kids with so I'm kind of nervous. It's about a 15-16hr drive according to the GPS. Any tips ya ladies got for me would be awesome!

Lots of snacks and drinks, frequent stops to stretch and walk around a little, portable dvd player, coloring books, car games, plastic bags in case anyone gets sick.....DD2 traveled her first really long car trip to Louisiana when she was 5 months and she did wonderful! As long as she ate and got held a little on our stops she was fine. She slept most of the way too so that really helped. DD1 likes to color and watch movies on trips. I just recently got both of them these car seat trays that buckle around the seat so they have a little table to eat and do activities on. Here's the link to the tray if you're curious: www.ltdcommodities.com/For-the-Home/Curtains%2B%252B%2BWindow%2BCoverings/On-The-Go-Play-%27N-Snack-Tray/prod440495.jmp?sorted=Y&navAction=push&fm=topnav&categoryId=cat51851&navCount=1recently I have been putting things in their reach too in a bucket or tupperware so I'm not reaching back getting them things constantly.

If you can handle driving at night leave around bedtime sot the 5 year old will sleep most of the way. I did a road trip out to Idaho when DS1 was around 3. We used a DVD player and only drove 8-10 hours a day. Stopped at hotels that had pools in them so he could get some exercise to burn off some energy before bed. Make sure you talk to your pediatrician about a dose of dramamine for the kids as well in case they get sick. Good Luck Drive Safe!

Depending on where you are coming I'd love to meet you!! If you have time, that is! What part of CO are you heading to? I have no travel tips with kiddos but you definitely deserve a break!

I second traveling at night... pres slept a huge chunk of the way to ny and Florida.... Biggest lifesaver... Dvd player and snacks... p was too young to care about reading and coloring while I drove. When we drove to Florida.... p was six months...easy, just stop a lot to make sure he isn't sitting in a soiled diaper for too long... will cause a rash.

Lots of drinks and snack absolutely!
When I drove out there with DD, she was fine going 3-4 hours at a time. I also had a portable DVD player that she could just sit and watch. So if you have anything DD can bring to keep her busy, coloring books, card games, even one of those little UNO electronic games or something...that helps a lot too. I also bought a big map every state we went to and some markers that she could mark off how far we were getting. She'd read the cities along the highway we were on and color them. Made it fun for her to see where we were at.
Which way are you guys taking over there?

Yay road trip! Have a wonderful time!
I like the above ideas and would add: little toys, cars, magnet toys, etc. for play time. You could go to a dollar store or the dollar bins at Target and wrap up little toys for the 5 YO to unwrap every couple of hours to add some entertainment for him. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Maybe even look up games in the car that you can play (20 questions, looking for the letters of the alphabet, looking at license plates from the different states) etc. to brainstorm when you hit a lull. And make sure you save some fun stuff that'll be new for the return trip.

Thanks ladies! Definitely bringing a DVD player and I got DD a leapster for her birthday that I think I'll give to her early to keep her happy in the car.
Ballerina- Well she lives in Arvada & her wedding is in Estes Park so I'll be in that area. Are you near there?
Amy- Not sure. My friend is taking care of all that stuff. I'm no good at it lol But hopefully we take the fastest way there!

I don't do any drinks for my DDs when we travel so I don't have to stop so much. My DDs tend to have small bladders. My DDs also like to play with their dolls.....barbies, little princesses that you can change their clothes, etc. For DD3 I have baby toys, a toy that hangs on the seat where she can see it and it makes noise(I think it was supposed to go on a car seat or stroller), a mirror so I can see her and she can see herself and lots of nuks. Have fun!
