My DD will start kindergarten in the fall. I've heard of a new charter school that has opened in Maple Grove (Parnassus Preparatory Charter School). Does anyone have any experience/thoughts on charter schools?
I sent the website to my mom who was a teacher, she thought it looked really good, but was concerned that with everything they said they focused on, reading was not listed. She was a reading teacher for her last few years teaching so that is important to her. I was excited about the fact that they start Spanish in kindergarten, but they also do Greek and Latin in the early years and I'm not sure what that would benefit.
I'd love to hear peoples thoughts, both the good and the bad.

Greek and Latin are the basis for many English words so it does help with vocabulary eventually because they can understand parts of the words-- anti means against, etc. Not sure about other stuff-- do they have visit days where you could watch a part of a day?
I don't know much about charter schools so take the info for what it's worth

My boys go to a charter school in MPLS. I transfered them once my youngest was starting K. My oldest was having to many problems with reading that I didn't feel the teacher was helping him with at all. The public school system was a big let down to us and they let my child down. He is still struggling in school but he has made some MAJOR improvements this year because all his teachers are working super hard to get him to where he needs to be. He went from testing at a PP level to reading at a level K this year! He is still far behind but I am really happy he is getting what he needs. The school is also helping me to set up testing for him to see if he might have a reading disability and are generally just staying on top of things when the public school just wanted to pawn the whole problem off on me.
Anyway, sorry didn't mean to go on a rant. My kids school is K - 8. There are some charter schools out there that go to 12th grade. I figured we would start here and if they want to go to a public high school we will consider that then. I LOVE that my boys walk into the school and EVERYONE knows who they are! They are going to a small town school in a big city. Some charter schools do a lottery system for enrollment but others don't. You should set up a meating with the principal to talk about the school and your concerns. I did that too because before they transferred I didn't know anything about charter schools. The teachers are all really nice and do really good about keeping me informed about what is going on.
I am sooooo very happy I made the decision to transfer them. I don't think they would have enjoyed the public school like they do this one. Our charter school also has extended day classes after regular school session gets out and in the summer they have two weeks off and start summer school and then have two weeks off before the start of the fall session. This I really like too because it is allowing my boys further chances and improving and learning more.

It has been a while since I posted this, but just checking back to see if anyone has specific feedback on Parnassus Preparatory School in Maple Grove. I'd love to hear anything you have liked or not liked.

I can't seem to get their website to open up. Rats...this is right by my work and might be a wonderful option for my kiddos. I'd love to hear anything, too.
