I may not go to Church but I still believe in Christmas.
My son's school is having a "winter" party with a book gift exchange. I know the kids will love it and have fun just the same but Boy have times changed. I'm afraid what life will be like when my son has his own kids.

At a Christian school it's odd they don't just call the holiday by it's name. Hmm.

That's what I was thinking Sharon. My son goes to a Lutheran school and they call his a "Christmas party"

My DD's is having a winter concert where everyone sings. They are singing some Christmas music (I think the First Noel), and secular songs but don't think they are doing other songs that have religions in them. She is in public school and there other kids in her class that are not Christian.

Last week I rang bell for the Salvation Army and I made sure to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I don't care if anyone was offended. It IS the birth of Christ after all.

I try tho only use happy holidays and season's greetings when I am referring to not just the Christmas season but also Thanksgiving-- so early-- this time of year that wouldn't apply

I had a Facebook message this morning from a friend whose son is in the first grade. They live in Virginia (the east-coast).
"Aaron sang about Kwanzaa and Hanukkah, but no Away in a Manger was sang last night. I'm sick of the winter party crap myself."
(I apologize for the previous misspelled words, I didn't pay attention when I copied and pasted but realized how bad it was)

When we tour potential schools and talk to educators, we always ask how they celebrate Christmas, Easter at their school -- DH specifically asks how they call these celebrations, as we were told by other parents that even christian songs are often changed and instead of children saying 'Christmas' in the song context, they are told to say 'holiday' or another alternative.

Eliza- I was thinking into that too the other day and thought I was being harsh or insensitive by me asking. Honestly, at my sons school (ECFE) I am sad they are not allowed to celebrate or recognize any holidays. I want my son in a school where HE CAN celebrate and share holidays there. We can't even do holiday themed art projects. No hand stamp with a cute message written on it from him anymore..... I am glad to see I am not the only one that this gets down...

One of the many reasons my DDs went/go to a Christian preschool.
I was surprised that my DD1's public school has an all school sing along on the last day before break and they actually sang some Christian songs. Hark the Herald, The First Noel and a few others I can't think of right now. They have a Christmas tree in the cafeteria, many Christmas decorations around the school that were done by the kids. I do wonder what families think that don't celebrate Christmas as Christ's birth!
The holidays were a main reason why I went into teaching. I LOVED all the holiday crafts, songs and stories. Someday I hope to get back to teaching at a private Christian preschool where I can still do these activities!
LC my DH does the same thing. Makes it a point to say Merry Christmas when some one says Happy Holidays to him.

When my mother went to school, not only did they call all the holidays by their names, there were many different religions presented at the school. I'm not sure why we wouldn't want to teach our kids about the differences there are so they're not afraid of differences in others. The library lady has been reading a lot of Christmas books to the kids and there is a tree by the office, but the party is called a winter party. Something is not right about that.

I personally would like to see schools that are not of dominant religion preference recognize all of the faiths and celebrations. Have Christmas parties yes but also celebrate the others as well. That way the kids have fun, everyone is included and they learn about each other!
