As I was decorating our tree this year and unwrapping our Christmas ornaments I realized that there are many special people and events in my life whose memories live on through the ornaments associated with them.
I remember my babysitter Paige from when I was 2-4 yo when my family lived in New Hampshire. I have a small red ball with my name on it glitter that we made together and has survived 30 years. Paige was murdered by her boyfriend shortly after my family moved from NH to WI (her parents were murdered by the boyfriend as well, my parents still get Christmas cards from her brother). The sad thing is my parents had just written her a letter offering for her to escape the violence and live with us. The ornament reminds me of her and all victims of domestic abuse
I have a strawberry shortcake ornament that reminds me of Lisa my friend growing up. We lived next to each other from age 5 until graduation (and our parents still live there). I think she gave me the ornament when we were in kindergarten.
The handmade ornaments that my mom passed along to us. There is the baby Jesus in the milkweed pod from preschool that I made and the clay ones from 6th grade that I painted and of course the horrible school picture in a wreath ornament.
I put up a Mickey & Minnie ornament that was given to us for our wedding by my cousin's grandparents. Bob passed away just before Thanksgiving and I am glad to have this to remember him by.
there is the ornament from Maui that DH and I picked out on our honeymoon.
I love the nostalgia of looking at all the ornaments and remembering the special people and moments in our lives.
Do you have any special ornament memories?

I don't have ornaments from my childhood--there weren't any really special ones anyway. I remember painting wood ornaments as a child.
I've purchased ornaments for my kids each year--either from a vacation or something they were interested in that year. THEY have lots of memories on the tree.

Each year my son picks out ornaments for his grandparents and great-grandparents. I had a teacher I loved as a kid who was Christian and it was something I did every year - long after I was in her class. So, when our son was born I wanted to start the same tradition as a way for him to honor his grandparents as they celebrate what is an important holiday to them. When he was a baby of course we picked for him, but now he puts a lot of thought in to looking at what is available and picking out something beautiful for each of them. And it's fun the years we've been there before they take their tree down to see them on their trees.
So, not an ornament memory, but ornament memories we are creating, I guess.

I do...there are a few that mom gave me from a trip she took to Germany. I have several that I bought when I went to Germany and for the last few years I have been meeting with my group of girlfriends and we do an ornament exchange so I get another memorable one each year. It is alot of fun to do and makes the tree a little more special.

Both DH and I have ornaments from our childhoods. My mom got us one every year so that when we left the nest we would be able to have a nice tree of our own. Not to mention the ones we made at church and school. Many, many memories!
Now for my DDs I do the same thing. Every year they get an ornament from me and one from my SIL(she collects Hallmark ones so she always gets them one). She also gets DH a Star Wars one every year, he has enough for his own tree! She is a Precious Moments collector too so she has passed some on those onto me too. I have 4 ornament boxes that are almost all full, I may need to get another with a new baby this year.
So we have a ton of memorable ornaments in our house. It's a lot of fun to decorate the trees every year!
