So I have never even looked into a daycare or home daycare before. I have two kids ages 3 and 1. On average how much does it cost for two kiddos? The 3 yr old does go to preschool so he would be picked up by bus 3 days a week for 3 hours each time--does that lessen the cost? I personally would prefer a home daycare btw.
Also...does anyone work full-time and have a special needs child that requires therapies? The preschool isn't an issue since a bus can pick up DS1 but he has other therapy twice a week that I bring him to...how would that work if I have a job and Dh has a job? Am I not able to have a job then? He can't not go...he really needs his therapy.

There are schools like Fraser and St. Davids where kids can get their therapies on site, have preschool and also daycare.

oh and in addition--I know there are some programs out there for reduced cost of daycare...anyone know how to get on them? They say the waiting list for the government funded one is over 1000 families long

My daycare is 115 a week. I believe she offers a family discount. If i had sent DD to preschool, the daycare cost would have stayed the same even though she would have been there less.

I would think that's typical. If you take a spot, you take a spot. It's not like they can fill the spot in the time you aren't using it.

We pay $135/week for in-home daycare that has preschool curriculum for our 3 1/2 yo. Most daycares charge the same even if your child is gone at preschool, b/c they are taking a spot.
The people I know who have children that need therapy have flexible jobs that allow them leave a couple times a week to take their child, or a PT job, or they find a place for their child's therapy that has early morning or later afternoon hours. When interviewing I wouldn't bring it up until it gets to the point they have offered you the job, then ask if there can be some flexibility with leaving early or coming in late to get your child to therapy. Also talk to your child's therapist and see what flexibility they have.

When DS was in daycare we paid $160 a week and our provider gave a 20% family discount if families had more than one child

So I have to pay that per child no good at all..... Ds1s therapy is only 30 minutes long right now and twice a week but it will increase as he gets older. I could maybe take a longer lunch...I hope!

I charge $100 to $125 a week, every place is different. My thought is I do not want to rip people off so I charge less. I also drop off at preschools, I have picked a kid up from his house a few times, taken another kid for 11 hour days, and a few times I have brought one kid into the doctors for the mom (the mom is a nurse).
Some places will give you a daily rate, if you could find a part time job and have days off that are days of doctors appointments you might be able to make that part a little bit easier.

I think I paid like $20 or $25 per child per day. When DS1 started Kindergarden (all day every day) the cost went down for him because he was only their part of the time. Both my boys went to an in home daycare and the lady was great. Also remember that holidays they are usually closed but you still have to pay for that day and they can take off so many days a year that are paid and unpaid. So not only are you paying for a day they aren't there but you have to find alternate childcare. And some will also make you pay if the child is suppose to be there but you call them in sick or something.

P.S. As far as taking time off to bring your kid to their appointments that really depends on the job. You could maybe work that into your availability say I need this day off or I can only work from this time to this time on Mondays. I have a great boss that allows me to come in late or leave early for Dr's appts but I'm not leaving twice a week so I think it is best to try and work it into your availability.

I had my DD in a center daycare and paid between $330 (infant) and $220 (preschool) per week! Crazy I know. After baby #2 we moved to an inhome and pay $177.50 for an infant and $160 for a 4yr old. My inhome does preschool for the kids, and my DD has learned more in her care than at the center. I have heard of providers who will take kids to preschool or appts. so it would be worth asking. It takes a lot of looking/questions to find what you need. My provider does offer PT rates and hours, she is very resonable with pricing and if she takes vacation we don't pay!

Way back when my DD was little it was actually more economical to have a stay at home parent so that's what we did. I worked while DH stayed home.

Oh man they may seem expensive but a good daycare provider is WORTH every penny IMO! I would pay a chunk of change for all the hard work they do! Off subject but I wanted to recognize good daycare people!
