I just finished a graduate school course on global leadership and we spent time talking about privilege. We have some non-white people in our course and discussed that while they don't have privilege based on race, they do based on education, socioeconomic status, etc.
I recognize that I have much to be thankful for and a lot of what I have came to me through privilege and some through the hard work of my ancestors when they had nothing and worked hard so their children could have education, but often not through my own deeds. Yes, I work hard, yes I put forth effort to achieve my education. But I don't have to justify myself to people and disprove a stereotype. I will most likely be given the benefit of the doubt in any situation. I also strive to understand other cultures, I try to listen and understand others and where they come from, I volunteer in my community and I respect people and their differences. Acknowledging privilege and being self aware are important steps to living together as many different people.
