Yesterday, my DD said she was going to stay in car while I went into the grocery store. I told her NO! (She's 4) It did get me wondering, though, what is an "appropriate" age?
I remember being left in the car a lot as a kid, but don't remember my age.

I was left in the car quite a bit as a child, but I don't remember the age either. I would say it depends on the kid. But not before at least 12 yrs old. Or maybe 16. I don't know! It's a much different world now than when we were kids so it's hard to say what the right time would be, if any.

I was left a lot too....pretty sure I was over 10. It is important to keep the door locked. I think a good age is where you can them not to play around with the car aka drive away in it.

I was left in the car too as a kid. I also can't remember what age. I'm way too paranoid to leave DD in the car even for a split second. (She's 5) She told me a couple times when DH has done that and I flipped out on him. I'm just not ok with that. Even if you're just running in to pay for gas or whatever, bring your child with you. Better to be safe than sorry.

I thought it was illegal in MN to leave your kid in the car? However, I remember being left there as a kid. I get too creeped out to do it with my kids....too many crazies out there these days.

I have a 10 yr old and an almost 7 yr old, I've not done it yet. I don't think I ever will, ok, maybe when they are 16 or something, but not now. I don't trust the crazies.

I thought it was illegal too, and haven't done it. I am way too paranoid to do it. The thought of a crazy person getting to them, or coming back out to a police officer scares me too much!

I'm with y'all. My first thought of the "appropriate" age was 16. I thought maybe I was being too protective!

I would rather be too protective than have to live a life of regret later!

I remember being left in the car at like 5 years old. But I also grew up in a very small town. But I would NEVER leave DD or DSD in the car by themselves. DD's told me multiple times she doesn't want to go in the store with me, but I don't care. Kick, scream, whine, cry, YOU'RE COMIN WITH! lol

I think it depends not only the age of the child and where you are, but the weather-- is it summer and really hot or winter and no heat in vehicle. I would never leave kids in those conditions, however have left DD (age 10) in vehicle while I go pay for coffee and take DS (age 2.5) with me. It is also near home and within view from shop window.

I've left my kids in the car if I'm running in to pay for gas or something like that where it will only take a couple of minutes (but I would lock the doors). Now I still don't like leaving them in the car by themselves (together) (they are 16 and 13).... but for different reasons.
