Any of you moms have kids with this? In the spring my DD coughed for 3 months straight. We got no clear answer from the docs. It did clear up for about 2.5 months, but now it is back.
The other suggestion was that it was allergies. I just wish I knew what this cough was.
It is never accompanied with a fever and it is always a dry cough. Thanks, Dr. Moms!

My son gets a cough every year for the last 3 years from about Mid-September to early November. I've brought him in numerous times last year and they just told me allergies, although they never did test for Asthma. They suggested I put a humidifier in his room and this actually did help a lot. We have a Vicks humidifier that you put this vapor liquid on the top dip (not sure what its called) and the steam comes up and it really does knock the cough out of the system.

Thanks for responding! I would love to try this. Her cough is always worse at night. I know what I'm getting on payday! Thanks, again!

My son had/has a similar cough. I learned that it was asthma. This was really strange for me, as growing up, my asthma always presented as wheezing and shortness of breath. After multiple trips to the doctor and medications, we finally began working with a pulminologist. My son now takes a daily medication that helps prevent the asthma/coughing. As long as he takes the medicine...he is good. If not...every time that he gets the tiniest cold or allergy issue, he coughs uncontrollably.

My son's athsma is like that, he'll cough because he just can't catch his breath. The dr didn't want to call it athsma, but it got bad enough recently that we ended up in the er because he was beyond coughing to not being able to take breaths, even with his albuterol. The er dr's finally diagnosed it as athsma after 18 months of him coughing. He'd only go a couple of weeks between coughing fits during that time, triggered by colds or allergies. It's been almost a month now that he's been on several medications, which have been cut back to 2 daily, and 4 when an attack is happening.

WOW JAzzy... Ditto for me... Alice with the cough, me with the same as you...
But Alice was mis diagnosed. She has acid reflux. She would cough and cough until she puked... But I grew up with a steamer in my room... The hot air humidifer like Renee says. With Mentholatum! But ya, now they have steamers special for the Vicks liquid. But do NOT NOT NOT by the generic brand Vicks liquid. It's NASTY.
This doesn't sound like what Alice had, but just something to keep tucked in the back of your mind.

My son has never been tested for Asthma, the cough comes and goes, that would explain it though. Maybe I should get him checked, right now the cough has disappeared, but for how long? He's never really seemed out of breath though/short of breath.
I have Asthma, I've had it since I was a young child. I also do have Acid Reflux and I am often having to clear my throat because it feels congested, but in reality it is the acid coming up like another poster said. I always have some kind of little cough, not a productive kind, and I often lose my voice and am hoarse, the doc says thats the Acid Reflux for me.

We just got another RX for an inhaler. We will see if it helps. DD had the cough in spring through part of the summer and know it started up again in the fall. We did put a humidifier in her room, but we haven't gotten her to actually sleep in her room yet.. I'm going to move it into my room when hubby leaves on Friday.
Is the albuterol helping Langston, Jazzy? or did they give him something else?

Langston actually takes Xopenex...which is a more expensive version of Albuterol. Albuterol makes him too hyper, and his behavior is uncontrollable. The Xopenex sometimes take care of the rescue needs....or at least calms him down.
He also is supposed to take Advair daily, to prevent the asthma. He was on Singulair for over a year, but he actually got depressed after using it for so long. When I took the meds away, he returned to normal. Seeing a depressed 4 year old, was not a good thing.

Jazzy, thanks for the info. I never though an inhaler could have side effects! I'm going to watch Gianna a little more closely after I give her the meds.

Our son has had these coughing spells too. none of the doctors want to diagnose him with asthma, yet they all say it's asthma related. so he has a nebulizer with albuterol and budesonide and an inhaler. He has had his current cough for about three weeks now, and we are back to using the nebulizer, delsym, and allegra, which nothing seems to be working. he hasn't had a fever other than when the cough first started, he had a fever for less than 24 hours. right now he also has a runny nose.
This past January he began coughing and it went on for three months, 4 doctor visits, a couple prescriptions and two steroid prescriptions. finally did some test and found out he was allergic to the cat we had for just over a year. just out of no where. so we got rid of our kitty :-( doped him up on nebulizer treatments and Claritin and the cough finally went away.
But this time around it is getting worse. keeps us all up all night, I'm so tired. he has lots of energy and the albuterol does make him hyper but I didn't think to ask for something else because the doctors said from the beginning it would make him hyper.
DS is very active, can jump on the trampoline for hours and never runs out of breath, or energy. so how could he have asthma symptoms? but not asthma? This is very frustrating. I hope you find something that works for you and your little one.

I hope you find something that works for you and your little one. Regarding the activity without running out of breath...it could be allergy and/or cold related asthma. When my son's asthma is not under control, the slightest cold will give him asthma. Also, if we get a huge sudden temperature decrease....it is guaranteed that he will have an asthma attack that day. Regarding the albuterol and hyperness....my kid was so hyper, that he was not himself! He could not control himself! Also, along with that hyperness, it was causing tachychardia (sp), which is an increase in how fast his heart was beating! My biggest suggestion...see a pulminologist! We didn't get the asthma under control until we saw the specialist!
