I have a 17 month old DS. Have been nursing before bed, once in the middle, and when he wakes for the last 4 months. I decided during Christmas break (I work full time) to get rid of the middle of the night feeding. Last night was night one. He screamed for about 15 minutes. Then snuggled a bit calmly. When I layed him down...screamed for 10 minutes and went back to sleep. Got up a second time and didn't want to be held. Sat on the floor reading for 10 minutes then let me snuggle him for a couple of minutes before he went to sleep again. Wasn't as bad as I thought. Has any body else been through this with a toddler? How long does it take before he stops craving milk in the middle of the night?

Our son was a little younger, about a year when we night weaned. It only took 3 nights before he stopped asking to nurse during the night. After that, we cuddled him and that was all he needed. The first night was a bit hard, with him up for a bit in the night, asking to nurse over and over. After that it got easier.

The last 2 nights he has gotten up and refused to be held. Looked at books in his room...drank some water, diaper change and back to bed with minimal crying. He didn't try to nurse. He gets up for at least 30 minutes. How to shorten that?

I'm not sure how to shorten that. It might just be a matter of sticking with it and it will shorten. Sounds like it's going pretty well though!

I agree just give it time...he will eventually rather sleep than protest not getting milk.

It has been 8 nights now...seems to be 15 minutes and he goes back. Not too bad. Last night he slept for 12 hrs straight. Tonight he got up once with hurting teeth.

Glad things are going well. DS never really nursed or ate at night so we didn't have to deal with this. I actually called our ped because at 10 days old he didn't wake up for 6 hrs overnight and my supply seemed fine. She said not to worry about it so I didn't.
He doesn't need food in the middle of the night at 17 months so I would probably just give him a pacifier or whatever his comfort item is and lay him back down.
