We used to spell things when the kids were little. Now our oldest ones are gone most of the time so we can speak freely. there are still some things we don't talk to DD about, regarding her brothers but it can wait. We talk quite a bit during the day.
Good question, Sharon!

Right now DS can't spell or read so we either spell it out or text it.

There are just some things kids don't need to know or be part of with the conversation. When that happens we tell her it's not "kid rated" and either she leaves the room or we do... or it waits until we're not around each other anyway.
For example, DD has no idea what those collection calls are. She's just told their sales calls because we don't answer the phone unless we know who's on the caller ID. She doesn't need the adult worry about shut off notices.

You could learn finger spelling! We use it. My 2 year old knows what all the letters are, but can't spell, so it works. (My 4 year old is oblivious:) ) But In wouldn't know the signs, and if he figures them out, you can do them right over his head without him even knowing. We also use a few key words in Russian - like pechenya/cookie. Because we do NOT say cookie unless B's about to get one -or else! Lol.
