For those with kids at tooth fairy age now - what did/do/will you pay for a first lost tooth?

Ian FINALLY has tooth that is quite loose. At 7, he's watched friends far younger than him loose multiple teeth, already knows the tooth fairy isn't real, and was SO discouraged that he hadn't lost a tooth yet. He's SO excited.

$2 for the first tooth, $1 for subsequent teeth. There was occasionally a bonus for a tooth lost in an unusual or dangerous way.

A $2 bill and pack of gum for the first 4 teeth. Then $1 and a pack of gum for all other teeth unless removed due to surgery or being pulled. DD1 is getting $5 for having 2 teeth removed today.

DD1 received $1 in quarters for her first lost tooth and $.50-$.75 each after that. (She's lost 6 now.) We have a Tooth Fairy book and in it it says that the Tooth Fairy leaves coins so that's what my girls get. Also, with the first tooth lost DD1 received a letter from her Tooth Fairy- Sparkle- telling her how great DD's teeth are and how important it is to keep them clean because clean baby teeth make the BEST magic fairy dust. There was a time I forgot to switch tooth for money so DD received an extra quarter (she thinks Sparkle was hiding in her room before she left for school.) We have also discussed how every family or area has different Tooth Fairies- hence the inconsistencies in gifts between families.

Thanks for the votes ladies - keep em coming! Angel, I love your fairy stuff!
He knows it's not real. That's one thing about loosing the first one so late - if it was a year or two ago he would have maybe believed in the tooth fairy. Still, he likes playing the game and is DEFINITELY excited about losing the tooth.

I found the book at the bookstore in the Rosedale Mall a few years ago. It is called "The Tooth Fairy" and is published by Igloo Books. It came with a small velvet pouch to put the tooth/money in (as explained in the story.) My girls love it!

When I was younger I received the golden dollar coins, or a couple 50 cent pieces. Usually totalling between $1-$2...

I give a golden dollar coin- all the shows show getting coins, so I go with that. Plus they get some kind of trinket, $1 book, one hotwheel car, hair clips, etc. It depends on what I find on clearance or in the dollar section at Target. I have a little spot I can have these things in case I need to give them a little treat. Dd got a little thing (travel size) of toothpaste for her first tooth.

We have a stash of $1 coins for when the Tooth Fairy needs to make a visit. It's kind of fun ... although I'm feeling a bit CHEAP!!

I may be a little late on the discussion, but we had "special circumstances" for both of ours. My dd, she had teeth coming in behind her other teeth. The dentist was ready to pull them out, to the tune of $300 if they were not out in the next week on their own. We told her if she wiggled them both out on her own, she could have what the copay was. She did, and she got $40, and I saved myself $260. Well worth it in my opinion - she worked on those teeth night and day for the entire week. She shared it with her twin brother, and they both got a treat. For his first, we were at Disney. We wanted it to be special, so we had the tooth fairy bring Mickey Money (these are regular bills that are spendable at Disney, with Mickey and other characters on them, in $1, $5, and $10 increments).

I decided that our tooth fairy is going to involve math with money, for the 6yr olds first tooth he received a dollar bill and four quarters. Next time probably a dollar bill and different change to equal a dollar. I decided to show him that many ways equal the same thing.
