The worker at the AG store who helped us was so nice and great to Ian. I had a slight worry that after saving his money for all those months he would arrive for the exciting event of buying his doll at the store and that an employee would be less than enthusiastic or something. But the woman we dealt with was just lovely with him.

I love this mom's basic response to point out the inconsistency in the messages we send to our kids (I guess at least that some of us send to our kids) that men and women are equal and both can be doctors, lawyers, carpenters, plumbers, teachers, etc. I have watched my mom (and heard her stories) fight gender stereotyping as a minister. When she was ordained she was the first woman in WI to be ordained in the UCC; she has had to work really hard to be an "equal" instead of an "anomaly".
We let DS play with whatever he likes. He currently loves Batman, Finding Nemo, Little Mermaid, toy food, etc. he'll play with is "babies" and also his trucks. Last night we made thank you cards for Christmas gifts and I would paint his hand and he would make a hand print for the cards. He picked pink and purple as two of his colors for the cards. Some people would say those are girl colors...I say he likes them.
Also, penis is not a "dirty" word. It is an anatomical term....people need to get over that.

I do have to admit that my youngest has diverted away from the "norm" at times. He wanted a doll house one year for xmas and my husband was a little "We can't get him that". Why not exactly? It has a mom, dad, and children. He is playing with a family....it doesn't have to be a girl item. Who cares what they are playing with. They boys have played barbies with the only girl on our block just to have a friend to play with. They have played "house" several times. My youngest LOVES Justin Beiber and most people think it's weird because he should only be popular with young girls. He loves the color purple because that is Justin's favorite color and even wanted me to paint his room purple! I am ok with my kids being whoever they want to be. DH has a few more issues with it than I do but he usually plays along after I explain things to him. LOL

My 4yr old DD is a tough cookie. She is strong, physically, and she likes all sorts of toys. She is the little girl playing with dinosaurs in a dress up dress. She asked for trains at Christmas this year, and she got dinosaurs for her birthday. While she likes your typical 'girl toys, she loves playing with 'boy' toys too.If they made pink colored dinosaurs that would turn into princesses she'd be super happy.

Thanks for sharing!
I loved the article. It made me annoyed with the situation that sounds like it could have happened almost anywhere unfortunately!
