I never thought I would be a mom who put patches on my kids pants. I had a few pair of pants with holes in them in my younger days, which wasn't so long ago (haha) but now my sons pants have been getting holes in his within weeks or a month of getting them. I quit buying Levi's bc they cost so much and when ds gets a new pair he likes to wear them everyday. A friend gave us some of her sons hand me downs and ds found a pair of pants that pull up and have a snap in buckle and he loves them. I bought three pair when I found a good deal at lands end bc that is the only place that sells them and they are usually $36.50. Way too much if they gets wholes so fast, and these have the double layer in the knees to begin with. But they are my six year olds favorite pants and I won't pay that much for them.
So I bought iron on patches and before the first wash, the edges on one are already curling up. How can I sew these darn things on? I saw something somewhere where a lady took the stitches out of the leg of the pants up to the knee then sewed with her sewing machine and re-stitched the side. I looked at th pants for an hour and couldn't figure out how to do that. I have a sewing machine but don't really know h ow to use it

How frustrating! Ian went through the knees on all his sweatpants in the Spring, but they were just sweatpants, so we just turned them into shorts for the summer. I don't sew, so I have no idea how to patch better. What does he do that he goes through them so fast? Is he sliding on his knees?

Sharon, we have carpet in our house and he is on his knees most of the time pushing toys around, chasing after toys, pretty much anything he does he has to be on his knees. Ds wasnt much of a knee kid until about a year ago. I was wondering when he was going to start getting holes in his pants like other kids and one day it happened, but a lot more than I ever thought.
I finally told ds yesterday not to crawl so much, especially in pants that don't have holes because I can see wear n tear on most of his pants now that don't have holes already.
Ds was so excited when I agreed to put patches in his three favorite pants, and iron ons seemed like an easy fix, but not now that they are coming off. I did try to hand sew, but OUCH, that is painful and looked bad, so I quit

Save the holey jeans for play jeans. I get my sons jeans at Target for like $8.99 or so. I won't spend much on jeans b/c my son is hard on jeans. I try to have him wear the non holey jeans to school.

Knee pads? Sweatpants that are specifically for when he is playing at home?

I don't let Charlie go to school in his pants with holes in them either Jodi :-)
Sharon, that is what I'm currently doing :-) The thing is, any type of pants, no matter the price or material seem to get holes in them fast. The three I'm trying to patch are his favorite because they have the fun buckle. I wouldn't let him wear them to school once I could see skin, so he was thrilled when I put patches on them. I'm just trying to find a way to sew the patches on to make the patches stay. The iron on won't last much longer I'm afraid. I'm thinking I may have to send these pants to my MIL who is spending the winter in Texas, it may give her something to do (haha)

If it were me I'd just let him play at home in the ones with holes in the knees. But I also have no problem with my kid going out with holes in the knees, so long as it's not too cold out.
