Hey Ladies! What are your best tips for traveling light? In March my DH and I are going to southeast Asia and I want to take only ONE carryon with my stuff. We're going to a wedding, so I'll need a couple of dressy outfits. We may decide to check one piece of luggage that will have a larger bottle of sunscreen, bug spray, etc. ... liquids over 4 oz. -- plus I want to have space to bring back items that we'll buy -- souveniers and what not.
If any of you have traveled to a developing country I'd love to hear tips on that as well. I've been to Nicaragua (years ago) for work so I'm not a complete newbie, but advice is always good. We're going to a travel clinic in a couple of weeks to update our shots and everything. I just want to prepare now so I'm not rushed as the trip gets closer. Thanks!!!

I have a friend that lives in Vietnam (for now) that I could ask if you want area specific ideas. But I remember from traveling-- roll clothes-- it avoid wrinkles somewhat- Have accessories that can change an outfit-- scarf or two or big chunky jewelry piece or two--

mini space bags! They flatten your clothing, and you can even use them for accessories if you want to protect them from germs, water.. anything.

Rolling clothes is a great idea, and you an also save space by putting small items in your shoes. Pack one pair of dressy shoes, and one pair of casual shoes, and wear your walking shoes when travelling. Antibacterial wipes were a must for me, as well as a travel sized Lysol can (I got the Up and Up brand at the travel section in Target). One major tip for travelling to that area of the world, is to prepare yourself for the amount of poverty that you will see, especially if you go to areas that are not right in the city. My parents lived in Shanghai for several years, and while my mom was there she went on lots of little trips to explore rural China. I'll email her and ask her for tips!

I've always been a light packer, and the way I do it is plan your clothes for the whole trip. I lay out each day and try to find things that can go multiple days (ie. Jeans), I also ensure that my clothes always go with the same shoes (that I wear), so if it doesn't match the shoes the outfit is out. Then I agree with the idea to roll your clothes. I do the same for everyone traveling with me. I only bring what I need, never any more, never any less.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tips! Love it. Sarah, what's a "space bag?" Is that something you can buy at AAA or Bed Bath & Beyond? I'm tempted to buy one of those things that sucks the air out of a bag, but then I wouldn't have it with me to re-pack for the return trip. We'll be in the Philippines--two days in Manila, and then out into a remote island area that's a bit touristy. Any tips are welcome!! I will absolutely think about what to wear each day, plan carefully and hopefully have some mix and match items. I'm somewhat worried about hoping to wear anything twice because it'll be SO hot I'll sweat a lot. Maybe I should bring some detergent with to hand wash ... but with the humidity maybe it would take too long to dry? Hmm. Maybe I'll see if the place we're staying has a laundry service. So much to think about!!! But it's a wonderful "problem" to have.

I can't believe I opened up this thread b/c I am the worst at packing light.....but only when traveling by car. I am great at packing light for overseas travel.
All these ladies have great tips. When I traveled to S. Korea for a convention we had 4 formal events. I brought silver shoes and wore the same shoes to all the events (I had black and navy dresses). I wore the same black dress twice and brought two different shawls and different jewelry. The dresses I bought were fairly wrinkle-free and rolled up nicely. I wore a lot of mix and match so I wore the same suit, but brought 3 different shirts for underneath. I wore the same shoes with my suits and my jeans.
I packed an empty duffel bag to fill with souvenirs (this was when you got two free bags checked) for the way back.
My friends tip is to pack old underwear and socks and throw them away when they are dirty.
Have fun!
