Has anyone ever done it? Has anyone ever had to use it?
I'm debating whether or not it's an option for us, but would like to here some other opinions on it from people who may have gone through it already.
TIA!

Amy,
I have read of a family on Caring Bridge that did do this, and then they had it frozen until their older child was at the stage in his treatment plan where he was able to have the cord blood transfused into his body. (They had to pay to have it saved and frozen, not sure of cost, may be different depending on who you store it with.).

We banked ds's. My OB gave me a hand out on it and I said well we have to do this. If you can afford it I highly recommend it. Is is expensive to bank but we looked at the long run how much it could save us. I would see what your delivering hospital does, some you need someone to come in and do it and others have someone there. Here is a helpful site I found. www.givingbirthnaturally.com/cord-blood-banking.htmlWhen people find out we banked they think we are pyscho. It doesn't harm ANYBODY and hopefully we never use it but what if.....??

There's a company I've been looking at doing it though, which says that my doctor has done it and so there would be no need to have someone come in and do it. It is expensive though.
And that's my thing...what if? At this point, with DH's health, I just think it would be best to be overly careful!

I didn't have much information on it when DS was born but if we have other children we will most definitely do it.

It is but I looked at it in the long run. Yea a chunk of change goes towards it but the what if and if we ever needed what an amazing thing that would be. No amount of money could make me change that outlook.

I thought about the what if's too. I think it wasn't available when I had DS1 but I was looking into DS2 but it was soooo expensive we just didn't have the money for it.

Well, I don't know that we'll be able to pull the money together ourselves, but we may ask for it as a gift from our parents.

We have chosen to do it. Our dr gave us a $500 coupon which def helped with the cost. See if your dr has any coupons or deals to use. That def helped us make our decision! I don't want to have something happen and not have it banked.

WOW! That's a GREAT coupon! I'll have to check that out. I see my "real" doc in a few more weeks, but I'll even see if my doc today has any info! Thanks for the tip

Anyone ever donated their cord blood? We can't afford the banking but would love to donate, but don't want it to go to research.

My only concern would be in regards to who has the access to my child's DNA and for what purposes (even if one declines to give researchers the access I am not convinced it won't be used in some fashion).
