My BD's brother committed suicide last August so she moved back from AZ to help her family with their remaining 5 children left at home. She has just found out that it looks like Mom and Dad will be divorcing. Dad carries around a lot of anger towards Mom and blames her for the death of her brother. Dad also is/was an alcoholic and has recently started drinking again. Since the brothers death.
I'm wondering, does this sound common? It seems like when something this tragic happens it either pulls you together or splits you up.

I agree. Tragedies like this can cause families to just be ripped to shreds. After all the ripping though, there's a hope of bringing everyone together again.

It definitely is common. It's hard not to blame or be blamed in that situation.

I think it's common too. Also people are so reluctant to get help! Counseling and such. I am very thankful my BIL reached out to his church when SIL died. It could have been a totally different outcome for him and my nephew.

They have 13 children. 4 biological, 9 adopted. It's just so tragic.
