Trygve (Trig-vee) Thomas has joined our small family today! He weighed in at 7 lbs 14 ounces and 20 inches long. His birth was definitely not what we expected! At my 39 week appointment on Wednesday, my midwife and I decided to go ahead with a scheduled induction as I was Group B Strep +, so this would be a good way to make sure I got my needed antibiotics before baby came. So, after a few hours of sleep last night, we headed out for the hospital and we here by 6am. They got me right in and started the pitocin. I was supposed to also get my antibiotics, but the nurse didn't see it on my papers, so it wasn't administered until my midwife came in at about 7:15 am. At the time of check-in, I was dilated to a 4+ and about 75% effaced. This is about a cm more dilated than at my appointment yesterday. I was also hooked up to the fetal and contractions monitors and wouldn't you know it, but I was having regular contractions at 3 minutes apart! Like Solveig's birth, they were not very noticeable to me. But they still went ahead with the pitocin. It was started very slow but definitely amped up my contractions! At 10 am, after my first round of antibiotics, my midwife came in and broke my water. I knew what was going to happen...strong contractions and fast! Yep, sure enough, they came on strong and fast, just like with Solveig. I sat on the yoga ball and bounced through them while my mom watched the monitor for me to help time them. At about 10:45, I decided I had had enough and was ready for the epidural. My midwife came in at 11 to check on me and I told her I was ready for the epi. Luckily, her other patient had also just requested hers so the anesthesiologist was already on the floor! She walked in at 11:24 and got the epidural in very quickly in between 3 contractions. And boy oh boy was it hard to sit still through these contractions! They got me all set up and I rolled over onto my back. First contraction came on and it did not feel like the others. Baby was very low and I felt the urge to push. The anesethiologists were still working at getting the actual epidural meds in at this point and had to stop to find the nurse and midwife. The nurse came back in and I had one more contraction before she checked me. Yep. Baby was down and I was fully dilated! They got the midwife in and mom went to find Anders as he had stepped out while I got the epi. Luckily he was very close by and came right in! Midwife came in after another contraction. We let another contraction go by and I started to push down in between the contractions. Well, I didn't get to the next contraction because he came out after one long push! I was in disbelief as was everyone else! Trygve was born at 11:38, just 14 minutes after the anesthesiologist walked into the room to start the epi. Well, it obviously didn't get a chance to fully set in but I do think it helped to take the 'edge' off. I was able to nurse about 20 minutes after birth and he did phenomenal! After that, Daddy brought me my traditional Big Mac and chocolate malt. Grandma Julie, Grandpa Tom, and Auntie Kristi all took turns loving on Trygve. Grandma Mel and Grandpa Tom brought Big Sis Solveig in later in the afternoon. That was a riot! She was a bit hesitant at first but then, after Grandma help baby for a few minutes, demanded that Mommy sit back on the bed and hold baby while she sat next to me. She patted his head and gave him kisses. It was the sweetest thing! Their visit got cut a bit short as we were then transferred to the post-partum room. But Solveig sure did love seeing the baby! I still cannot believe how fast Trygve was born. The nurse said we were shooting for a 1pm delivery, but we definitely beat that! I am feeling great, no pain, just a sore back from the short epidural I had. We are hoping to be able to go home tomorrow!
