My son will be 17 months at Christmas and I have no idea what to get him for Christmas. I looked at a bunch of the toys at Target last time I was there and just felt overwhelmed. I think my parents are going to get my son a wagon. I feel like he already has so many toys- so I'm debating on if getting a big ticket item is better than a bunch of smaller toys.
Also, what are good stocking stuffers for 17-month-old?

17 month olds just don't care about gifts. You could wrap up some of his old toys and he'd be just as happy!
Wrap up diapers, sippee cups, socks, tshirts, box of snacks, etc. He will enjoy the wrapping and the boxes.

I agree.....once they turn 2 is when they start loving all these gifts...at that age all they cared about was the boxes.....howabout some of his favorite snacks...I know my kids LOVED to eat snacks at that age!

We didn't get him a gift last year (when he was 4 months) because we knew his aunts and uncles and grandparents would spoil him like crazy. He's the first grandchild on both sides. But this year I feel like I want to get him something. He does love Plum's puffs and Earth's Best graham crackers- maybe I'll just get him that stuff!! He also gets excited when he sees blueberries!

you could fill the stocking with stuff he already needs - sippy cups, shampoo, socks. Kid like those Crayola bath crayons. The ones for toddlers are very easy to hold on to.

Crayola has crayons for 18 month olds if he likes coloring? You could also get those big coloring pages, that would be fun!

When choosing presents for our son when he was 1 and 2 we went for basics that we could later build on - a doll house, a basic unit blocks set and a kitchen set - all wood so they would be sturdy and last. Then in the years that followed it made it easy to buy small sets to accompany each of these. It also made it easy to give other people suggestions when they asked. That way he got things that he could play with for years to come (he's 7 and still using all of them) and that grew and changed with him as his play developed.

We got my DD a slide for Christmas when she was 18 months, she loved it! It was pretty small, maybe 2 ft and could go in the house. We also got her a little motorized 4wheeler, she never liked it but I had friends with boys that age and the boys LOVED it!

maybe get some stuff for you two to do together like crafts. if you want to do a big ticket item, maybe wait a little longer and see if disney on ice is coming to town or anything around then.

I have to say that my 11 month old LOVES gifts...he loves wrapping paper and the toys inside. He however is really advanced as far as playing with toys goes...
I agree with everyone else though the majority of babes under two could care less other than the unwrapping part. My older ds didn't even care about unwrapping or anything until 2. I would do snacks and socks maybe a soft car to drive around for in the stocking.

Sesame Street Live is coming to town in January HINT HINT! We got Tix the day they came available. I dunno what we did for his first Christmas. I did get him one of those huge bead maze things, a trike (sp) a few clothes, slippers, finger paint and artsy fartsy stuff since he loves that. Sippys, bubble bath, bath crayons, a new bath hooded towel for the stocking stuffers.

We did Children's Museum membership as the Christmas present for DS when he was 20 months old. I am so glad that is what we decided to do as it was something we shared as a family for the year.
