If you're into crafts, coloring and all that crayola color wonder is AWESOME! I got DD a bunch of that stuff when she was younger and she still uses it. I love it because she can go crazy and color/paint and I don't have to worry about dealing with paint/marker getting all over my house or all over her

Ds loved unwrapping too.. but was into the paper and box more than what was inside.. at that age, I'd say maybe a shopping cart with some fake food...
a zoo membership
wooden blocks
cars with a road map rug
maybe a sled

I agree with others have said (my son is almost 20months now) He is 100% boy and loves his cars and those little matchbox cars are so inexpensive it is nice. Crayons, paper, paints, snacks also throw in a toothbrush and toothpaste (my son thought that was the coolest gift last year and we will do it again this year) Also last year we got him a small motorized 4wheeler that we found on craigslist and he plays with that all the time he loves it so much we used to keep it in the house because it was small enough but then we moved it outside this last summer. We don't do too much since he is the only grandchild on my side so I know they will go crazy but our investment guy also sends postcards to all our family telling them about our DS college saving plan that they can invest in for a present which our family loves being able to do

I was thinking along the lines of a membership somewhere (children's museum, mn zoo) or a fun ECFE class that you could do together--more of an activity than a physical gift.
