So there is a strong possibility DH is getting a job in Olympia Washington. We would be moving June 18th. How should I be prepping? How do I pack a moving truck to withstand driving through multiple mountain ranges and what is the best time to leave with young children? Middle of the night? I have never moved further than 10 miles and it makes me nervous! I don't want to wait til last minute to start doing things...meaning making sure dh got the job but I feel silly prepping for a move that isn't 100% for sure yet....it's about 85-90%. Do you have to pay in full to reserve a moving truck? Can I get my money back if we end up not going? Anyone here moved across country taking I-90? My dh said he is nervous to drive a big truck through the mountains.

DH and I drove a 26 ft moving truck from Kentucky to Seattle for friends. The mountains were NOT fun but it is doable. Just be prepared to take your time. Also, make sure the heaviest stuff is at the front of the truck. We had a complete weight machine and an 8 foot hot tub at the very back of the truck. It resulted in a lot of back-end sway.
As for prepping? I would probably declutter and get rid of any unnecessary stuff in drawer, closets, storage, etc. That way there will be less to pack when it is "for sure".
Good luck. Sounds exciting!
Definitely avoid driving the mountains in the dark. That would be truly scary!

Good luckkkkkkkk!! Exciting! I agree.. de clutter and donate..get rid of anything u don't need. I moved here from Ny. And if it didn't fit in my car it didn't go. I didn't have a kid then but still... If u have a lot of books... ship them ups with the special book rate ..once u have an address .. cheaper and will save a lot of room. I shipped ten big boxes...

Jeez I would be really afraid of all that unknown. I do agree with Bunsy though. Start with just decluttering the house. Get rid of anything you don't need anymore and that will be a HUGE thing to have accomplished if/when you do need to start packing.

I agree declutter and get rid of things you don't need! When we moved from Florida we put a U-Haul trailer on the back of our car.....if we ever have a big move again I'm hiring a moving company! My cousin moved back to Iowa last year, she hired a moving company and they did ALL the packing and she scheduled a time to get her stuff dropped off. The new company she got hired too also paid for the move so if he gets a job see if they have some sort of moving options! And when she moved up here from Texas she rented one of those PODS and it got delivered to her when she was ready for it!
We didnt' have kids when we moved but when we went to Louisiana for Christmas a couple years ago we left at 4 in the morning and I was SURPRISED at how well the kids did traveling so long during the day. When we left we left at their bed time and they slept most of the way back.

Good luck, Hannah!! Wow, that is a big but exciting change!
I second the above -- just go through and get rid of all of the things you don't want and need. Think about the cost (both financial and time-wise) of packing, shipping, and unpacking the items while you're debating what you want to get rid of.
