We are moving up this summer from Georgia and we won't know where we are living until late June/early July. When is kindergarten enrollment and should we be looking at a y specific districts?

Hi Camilla,
WELCOME TO MOM (Mom's of Minnesota)!!!! Glad you found us!!!
I don't know the answer to your questions, but I just wanted to Welcome you!!!
Do you have a girl or boy? Just one or others too?
Where will you or dh (dear husband) be working, what city or suburb? That may help in finding a school.

Welcome to Minnesota! It really varies depending on where you are moving. There is a lot of school choice in the cities, but the deadlines will long be passed, so you'd be looking at what is left. I'm not sure if there are any exceptions made for people who move into town right before the start of the school year like that. If you are moving into one of the cities I would call the placement office and talk to an actual human being to see. If you are moving into the burbs then I think you can just go to your neighborhood school, at least for the year, and then look at school choice options for the following year if you would like. It's also worth putting your name in anyway, because things happen and sometimes there will be a chance to get a spot at a school you want mid-year. Do you know any more specifically what area you are looking at? There are moms on here from all over and so someone will likely have some more specifics for you depending on that. Are you moving for a job? If so, where is the job located?

And you don't happen to be Jewish do you? If so, then I know the BEST school.

We are moving to the burbs for sure. My DH's office is located in Eagan so we were trying to stay close. So far I have been keeping an eye out for houses in Bloomington, Apple Valley and Eagan. We had heard good things about those public schools so I was trying to stay within that area. DH also doesnt want a monster commute because he already has that here in Atlanta. And no. We arent Jewish. )

Inver Grove Heights has good schools and is right next to Eagan. I have heard that Eagan/Rosemount/Apple Valley (same district) has good schools also.

Typically, kindergarten enrollment happens in late winter--I think my school district enrolls kids in January. That being said, you're not the only parent who's moving in the summer. If I were in your shoes, once I knew where we'd be living, I'd contact the local school(s), see what the availability is, do some research on your options -- there's sure to be families moving away during the summer, leaving open spots. You'll definitely find a place for your child in your closest school. The only hitch would be if you wanted to open enroll your child into a different school, they might have limits on the space for those students.
Good luck with the move and getting adjusted to Minnesota!! It's a great place to raise a family.
