Out of the blue yesterday, the subject of make-up came up while DH and I were talking. I asked, "so what age do you think is appropriate for DD to start wearing make up?" He totally blew me away with his answer: between 7 and 9!!! Okay, I was thinking sometime in middle school, but was open to when, but 7 to 9 seems awfully young.
How old were you when you were allowed to wear make-up and what age would you or did you allow your DD to wear make-up?

I was in middle school, 7th grade I think. I agree with you - 7 to 9 seems very young. My son is 7 and none of his contemporaries are wearing make up nor would I imagine they will start soon. That being said some of this is cultural. We looked at some schools where by 4th and 5th grade the girls were in what I would consider very skimpy, teenager style clothes and had a lot of make up on. I don't know if those were the culture of the community or of that school. One of the things I liked about our school was seeing the kids of all ages in casual clothes, not made up, focused on learning. I remember seeing preteen girls in sweats with their hair pulled back, bent over religious texts, discussing interpretations. It really stood out compared to what we had just seen at another school.

I think I started wearing make up in 10th grade. And I only wore concealer for pimples and powder on top. That's just me, though. Now I usually don't wear make up either being a stay at home mom, except when I go somewhere where I know other women are going to be wearing it, just to fit in.

I went with middle school as well. It seems like a good time since they are going off to another school with different kids, etc.

I'm thinking with dd she is going to have to be at least 14 or 15. I really want her to know that she is beautiful without makeup. She is 2 now and thinks she has to put make up on when im getting ready it's cute. Right now!

Wow, 7-9 is very young!! I was in 7th/8th grade, and only wore a little bit. If I had a DD, I would tell her the same thing...7th/8th grade.

My mom introduced me to make-up in 6th grade. Never wore it, like ever. But then again I was a swimmer and make-up was just an extra annoying step.
7-9yr old may be OK for like chap stick or glitter lipgloss, but that's it.

The first time I wore makeup was for the 6th grade dance (our "graduation" from elementary school) then I started wearing makeup on a regular basis in 7th grade- Jr. High. Prior to that, though, I always wore really red or bright pink lipgloss. (See, I've ALWAYS been a lipstick girl!) DD1 will be 7 this summer and there is no way she should start wearing makeup! That's only 2nd grade! I just think that most guys don't have a clue when it comes to appropriate ages and stages for things.

I remember being allowed to wear a little lip gloss and maybe light makeup starting in sixth grade. I had older sisters so I think I wanted to be allowed to get all "prettified" like them. I think when my DD goes to middle school she can start, but we'll talk about what's appropriate for younger tweens / teens etc.

I think I was only wearing lipgloss and maybe a little eye shadow until I turned about 12-13?

Did he mean for playing around. There are little girls lipglosses and nail polishes out there. LOL
I was about 14yo I think when I started to wear make up. I don't have any girls so this topic isn't an issue for us.

Thanks ladies I thought I was totally out of touch! Play stuff at home is ok for the ages dh said. Personally I don't wear makeup so when she wants to start with it I will have to take her somewhere to learn. I'm so glad that is a few years away yet. I want to enjoy my little girl!

I started wearing makeup in high school, not a lot then. When I graduated from college I started wearing make-up daily, I thought I looked more professional and pulled together and as a 23 year old supervisor I think it helped me be taken more seriously. My mom didn't wear make up so I had to do a lot of trial and error
I think at the earliest middle school is appropriate
