I have never thought of that before....not sure why I haven't or why it hasn't been taught. We have bike helmets so why not grab them in case of a tornado watch and put them on when we head to the "safe area" of our house, it is definitely safer than using your hands. Not sure why the CDC isn't jumping on board, while their might not be sufficient evidence that they help in a tornado they certainly can't hurt and being struck by debris is often the biggest issue, our brains are so important why not take the extra step?
Thanks for posting!

That was my thought too. It's easy to do and there doesn't seem to be a downside. If we just store our helmets on the way to the basement or even in the basement (I don't mind going down to get them before biking) then they are accessible when taking shelter. The kid who landed on his head and was the LEAST injured of the family that was sucked up convinced me.

They said on the news to take your old helmets and keep them down in your basement. Also old carseats to strap younger kids in. One more thing was to keep some shoes down there that you don't wear anymore since people often are barefoot at home. With all the debris after a storm you need something to protect your feet. All makes sense to me!

Good ideas! We also have one of those all in one things with a radio, alarm, flashlight, etc that we keep in the basement in case of storms. That way when the power goes out I can still listen to what is going on or have a light if need be.

Typically during the spring/summer season, I create an emergency basket. I keep blankets, water, snacks, flashlight, first aid kit, change of clothes and some random toys in a laundry basket in our safe area. It helps keeps the kids calm by distracting them and keeps it all easily accessible. I haven't done this yet this year...think that will be on my To Do list tonight when I get home. May be adding our helmets in there. Makes total sense!

My mother always had motorcycle helmets on hand for it.

I think it's a great idea...we don't own any though. I am terrible with storm preparedness and have nothing. I am usually the one outside watching...kind of hard to do with kids now.
