One of my best friends got married in a private ceremony (just her and her new husband) late last year. She lives in PA and I have been trying to figure out what to get them as celebration of their union.
She and her new husband are visiting in 3 weeks and I am super excited to see her (it has been about 7 years) and meet her new husband. The problem is I need a creative and unique gift idea (ideally something locally crafted). When DH and I got married she gave us a handsewn decorative cloth that we use as a wall hanging. It was sewn by women outside the royal castle of Uzbekistan especially for us (she was in Uzbekistan and had it commissioned). So I don't want to reciprocate with towels or something boring.
Thanks in advance!

Get her something Minnesotan such as wild rice or locally made.

What about making her something out of glass. Here's a website to check it out. www.mnglassart.org

I was gonna say a blown glass sculpture too.. but I would have someone else make it lol.. My inlaws get one made every couple of years or so... they are beautiful!
or how about something made with mosaics.. there is a place on snelling, past energy park dr that you can go to to make mosaic pictures, garden things or sculpture like things. its pretty cool!

Is there a place where you could get some Minnesota Native American art? That's my idea ... or a gorgeous framed photo of a MN scene ... a Brandenburg-type print perhaps? (Assuming a Jim Brandenburg would be out of your price range ... )

A movie night basket. Packs of microwave popcorn, boxes of movie candy and a gift card to rent a movie or subscription to netflix or a few of their favorite movie DVDs.

Oops that might not be what you meant, I didn't read the whole post!
How about some hand stitched dish towels? I'm not sure where to tell you to look for them but I know my Grm makes them and sells them at a shop in Northern MN. It's a little shop where senior citizens bring their crafts to sell. I got 2 sets for my wedding, I saved 1 and use the other. They are the ones with the days of the week and a picture.

If she is a REALLY GOOD FRIEND -- Kinda expensive but kinda cool (at least I think so - but I like to recycle and like repurposed things) -- deck furniture made out of recycled plastic gallon milk jugs. I think it is made right here in MN (I see it at the MN State Fair and have coveted it for years and never bought it just because of the price; it never wears out - kinda like trex decking stuff) and you could have two adirondak (spelling) chairs shipped to them in PA.

I would second the wild rice or maple syrup.

Take a stroll down Grand Avenue and pop in the local small shops.

A small book of local recipes, perhaps you could even write up some favorites and bind them into a book or put them in a small recipe card holder with room to expand? I know I learned more cooking techniques after I got married than before.
