From: Pocket Your Dollars: Where is the best price on a family yearly pass to the MN Zoo? Nicky says: June 7, 2012 at 3:43 pm It is my understanding you can only purchase a yearly pass directly from the zoo, I have been a member of the MN Zoo for 5yrs and it has been well worth it with 4 kids it pays for itself with 2-3 visits, I spend an extra $10 a year for family plus and can bring a friend or family member free every time. Sheila says: June 8, 2012 at 7:48 am You might want to get the Zoo pass soon! Our family has been a member for the last # of years and I just got an email reminder that I need to renew it. The prices for the pass are increasing as of July 1, 2012 from a household pass price of $110 to $130 and then the household plus is going from $130-$155. Be sure to get the pass sooner than later! That’s an easy way to save $20-25!! Our family goes every few months and I’d highly recommend it! www.pocketyourdollars.com/2012/06/open-mic-6712/#commentswww.mnzoo.com/membership/membership_levels.asp

I love that zoo.. but they are definitely missing some vital animals... unless I've missed them... elephants? giraffes?

No elephants. They had giraffes for a while, but they were "on loan". I agree though, for as big and spacious that their property is, they could definitely add in a few more "big" animals!

Now that the dolphins are leaving I really have no reason to go anymore. We prefer Como anyways.

The Discovery Bay is in desperate need of repairs. They got the grant to do the repairs, but since the male dolphin is the oldest dolphin anywhere in captivity, they dont want to move him again to bring him back after repairs. Sooo, all the dolphins will stay wherever they are moved to no plans right now for other dolphins, as they dont condone taking them out of the wild just to go in a zoo. I wonder what they'll do w/the dolphin pool once its repaired....

I'm probably the only one who won't miss the dolphins...I don't agree with keeping marine animals at zoos for show and play...if they need to be in captivity for life and death reasons it should be at an adequately equipped rescue center. They just do so poorly with those tanks, it breaks my heart.

I love the MN zoo. I love Como too, although they are totally different. MN zoo is a whole day outing and even then you usually can't see and do everything - which is OK with me. It just makes it different each time.
Como takes an hour or two to see everything and is close to home, so it's somewhere we can pop over to for a short time.
There are some things I wish both would do differently and always I would like the focus to be on the animals and their well-being and not our entertainment. So, while I was sad to hear there wouldn't be dolphins in one sense, I had been worried for a while since they had so many deaths and things weren't going well. So it made sense and I'm glad they aren't trying to keep them at the expense of the animals.
Elephants need a ton of room and are smarter than us, and also can't do winter I don't think. So I think there are many reasons why they don't have them.
I expect we will keep our MN zoo membership, and continue to donate to Como.

I agree Super. After seeing the cove I feel extremely guilty for ever going to sea world!

wth!! the price just went up 17 bucks this year as well. Going up more? We have always gotten a membership as we use it but with this price we have to go more now. I much prefer MN over Como but it is such a hike.

We love Como Zoo for the same reasons Sharon said. We live so close and it can be a quick outing for the day.
I haven't been to the MN in ages (probably since I was 8 or so). We'll go once this summer to see the dinosaur exhibit and I contemplated the year pass, but we are so busy and with it being in Apple Valley I don't think we'd go more than 2x in a year so it is not worth it then. There was an article in Mpls/St. Paul mag (or Minnesota Monthly) can't remember now, about the dolphin exhibit. The number of deaths is highly unusual and concerning and there are so many repairs that are needed. I appreciate that they won't take dolphins out of the wild for captivity and if that means we can't have dolphins it makes sense.
I didn't realize they didn't have elephants....if you are looking for weekend getaways the Milwaukee Zoo has elephants and is fun to go to.

Jeez don't they charge people enough especially since we live in MN and it is only really nice 6 months out of the year!
We don't usually go to MN Zoo. We really like Como better anyway!
