I'm going through a 1/3 life crisis (I'm 31) and have recently wanted to find my career "passion." So I've read through a few of these other threads on WHAT you do for a living, but I want to know WHY and HOW did you pick that? Is it just a job to bring home money or do you really have a passion for it? I've been reading books on picking your next career and it always says to do something you love...but I can't seem to figure that out for myself!

Mine, is a job to provide for my family. Would not have been my first choice, I like it but would not encourage my children to have this for a career.

Right now I have my own childcare and it found me. I have always wanted to work with kids since I was younger. I have a child development degree and have worked in a few centers, but wanted to stay home with my kids. When I had my DD1 I went to ecfe and would babysit on the side for friends who needed it.
I started watching kids on a regular basis, so then I decided to make up some rules and started my childcare. I have been very lucky to have only kids who I have known or word of mouth. I have to turn people away or I could have up 20 kids every day. I had DD2 with the childcare and everyone came back after my 6 weeks off. I have lost a few kids due to jobs or moving, but I am always able to find new kids. I plan on doing this for a another few years, but then I want to try a preschool or another school.
I love working with kids and will do till I get to babysit my grandkids:) I was lucky to know that I wanted to work with kids. The fun thing is there are so many ages to work with. I have always wanted to do something with teen moms and might try it. Good luck in finding something you love.

I work with people with developmental disabilities as a group home supervisor. I love it because it combines my love of working with people with disabilities and my love of helping people develop their leadership skills (I do a lot of leadership development work with the supervisors that I supervise).
I have a Psychology and Biology degree and in college volunteered w/ Special Olympics which I loved. I started working in direct care w/ people with disabilities straight out of college and was promoted to supervisory positions over the years and feel really passionate about it. I am not sure what my next step will be as this position no longer challenges me intellectually, but I still feel a passion for my work.
I recommend reading "What Should I do with my Life" by Po Bronson. I found it helped me to be reflective on where I was and what I wanted to do.

I have to ditto what LC said. I am very good at what I do, however, I know in my heart that it is not what I am supposed to be doing.

Well right now I'm a SAHM but teaching is my passion! I hope to someday go back to teaching preschool when my DDs are all in school and don't require daycare anymore. I have my degree through 6th grade but let my teaching license expire. I don't need it to teach preschool and I have no desire to teach above preschool. I have done daycare off and on since my DD1 was born. Sadly I just can't seem to keep anyone, they keep moving away! =o(

I work two part-time jobs. One is the basic, "I'm doing this for the pay and benefits to support the family" job. The second one is my passion--doing PR projects and some videography. The second job is a great fit because I love to write and edit; I feel like I'm making a difference by helping our clients better their websites and other materials, such as brochures; I like to do video projects because it allows me to be visually creative; and I love my boss and coworkers.
I've always enjoyed writing and I'm good at editing and noticing details (it's that detail oriented/anal retentive part of me I guess) so going into this field is a great fit.
I would say to think about the things you really enjoy doing--like you're so into a project that you get into a flow, lose track of time, and feel invigorated by it.

Maybe my issue is that I'm so caught up in being a mommy to a toddler that I don't remember what my passions are! I know I like to read, I love music, and like to play piano...I guess I just think I'm stuck in the job I'm in because of the money and because I'm actually using my degree. I think I'd have a huge amount of guilt on myself if I wouldn't be using my degree. And I chose this degree when I was 17...what do you know of life at 17 really?! That's the problem with going to a 4 year college right out of high school...you pick a degree in what you love at the time and don't think about the rest of your life.
