So the last two nights, DS2 (who is 4) has been waking up in the middle of the night. He is terrified and he claims that he can hear 'pounding' in the basement. He cries and cries and does not want to stay in his room. The first night this happened, it was close to when DH comes home. So I told him he could snuggle with me until Daddy got home and then Daddy tucked him back in to bed. Last night the same thing happened. He is shaking and will cry to the point of almost screaming because he doesn't want to be in his room alone. I allowed him to sleep on the floor in our room last night. However, I do NOT want to make a habit of this. He needs to stay in his own room. Does anyone have some words of wisdom or have dealt with this before? He has a very bright nightlight in his room already. It doesn't seem to help.

My friend went through this for years with her son and didn't have a great solution except that he eventually grew out of it.
DS has been having nightmares the last couple of nights. We have resisted bringing him into our bed to try to not create a bad habit. What we have done is DH or I have laid with him in his bed until he falls back asleep. I wish I had a better idea than that for you.

I did a little more research and found they aren't terrors. But he keeps claiming he hears pounding in the basement and is genuinely scared. I think I may have to try that. I am going to go to Target today and buy a sound machine, too. I am hoping if I can get him to focus on that, then he won't be hearing noises anywhere else. DH is very against him sleeping in our room. I don't blame him, but sometimes it's what has to be done. I just don't want it to become the norm or a habit.

Does he have a night light in his room? That might help too! Good luck, DD has night terrors sometimes and they are no fun at all.

We put an air purifier in DS1 room and told him it was a monster scarer offer. Worked for him.

Is there a noise actually coming out of the basement that hasn't happened before or something he might not have noticed before? Perhaps you're using your a/c and that is starting to make noise or some other machine down there is making noises?

OOB - I love that. I may use that when I bring home the sound machine today.
Kristin - he has a rather large night light in his room. I think he is starting to get to that stage of scares, though. He now makes us shut his closet door and never has before.
Cake - No new noises. I sat in the room with him the last two nights trying to determine what he was hearing so that I could explain the noise to him. That's what is so confusing about this.

You can also give him a spray bottle with a special solution that gets "rid" of whatever he is afraid of! Then he can combat the scaries himself and spray his whole room and bed. The special solution is water of course with maybe some sparkles inside??

We use an air purifier too and still use a classical music lullaby Cd.. drowns out all outside and inside noises... even noises that wake me up! ((Though I have an air purifier in our room too!))

My dd was scared of something to and we talked about what could get rid of the monster. She decided that dragons could protect her, so we got a stuff dragon and she puts it on her bed. I think it helped because she was able to help solve the problem. She is 4 too and has a very active imagination.

Well, I tried a sound machine last night. Not sure if it was a fluke or it actually helped, but he did sleep through the night. Let's hope this continues to work!
