What is your child afraid of? What helps, if anything?

my DS HATES loud noises-- the vacuum, hand dryers, toilet flushes, etc-- loud tv and radio don't bother him-- just the sudden- even if he knows they are coming. He will cover his ears and run away-- doctor gave referral to ENT but haven't gone yet. It could be sign for autism-- but that would be his only sign He also doesn't like getting his face wet-- but neither do I.

The dark is the biggest thing right now, although my son has had a lot of fears over the years. His latest thing is that he will only sleep with the covers completely over his head (which is illogical to me, since it makes it MORE dark, but he feels safer) but in the heat he sometimes wakes a lot and then is freaked out. Ugh. We had a rough night Friday, but all slept well last night for which I am very grateful.
I think I just need to remember that most of the time it's not a problem, and just be patient if we have a night every once in a long while where it is a big deal.

DS has an on/off fear of the dark...right now he's not afraid. He has a couple of wall lights in his room, that we got from Ikea. I usually turn one on (it has a low watt light bulb so it doesn't make the room super bright) as he goes to bed, and then turn it off when he's asleep. Growing up, I had a huge fear of the dark, and had a nightlight well into my teens. Is there any way you could put a night light or small lamp in the hallway outside of his room? Good luck hun!!

LOL! I should have said. We have a nightlight in his room, in the hallway outside his room, in the bathroom next to his room, and in our room which is down the (short) hallway. Friday night he was still too terrified to uncover his face.
Part of what I'm finding is that his definition of "dark" doesn't really make sense to me. Which makes me think it's not really about dark. But I don't know.
Fear doesn't live in a logical part of the brain I don't think, which is part of what makes it hard to deal with sometimes for me.

Deanne- my DS doesn't like those same noises....he is 4 and does not have autism. He just doesn't like the sounds, our family doctor said if he doesn't have any other hearing concerns she isn't worried as it's pretty common.

Ian was afraid of loud noises up until a couple of years ago.
With the vacuum one thing that worked for us is having a "vacuum parade." While one of us vacuumed the other one would help him choose from his instruments and make lots of loud "music" that he had control over. It became a fun thing and he would enjoy "scaring the vacuum back" with his instruments.

DS1 like Deanne's son does not like loud noise either. It is indeed a sign of autism but if that is the only thing they display I would say it is safe to say he doesn't have it. My Ds is autistic-well we are 90% sure he is, and he has many more symptoms.
Ds2 is only scared of what DS1 is scared because he thinks he is suppose to be but then he quickly becomes unafraid. So really nothing at the moment.

My 4YO had her first nightmare recently and is having a hard time going to sleep at night. She's so scared that the nightmare will return. I just encourage her to think about her favorite things--princesses, her friends from preschool, playing dolls--telling her that chances are, she'll dream about what she's thinking about right before bedtime. This newfound fear of bedtime is NOT fun. (Sigh.)

Aha! Ian finally explained to Tina today why he has been so freaked out - it's those F^*&%*ing Grimm commercials NBC keeps showing at random moments during the Olympics. I was pissed about that but had not made the connection.

Both girls don't like the dark. They have a dim wall light that stays on all night. They like the hall light and our bedroom light on before they fall asleep.
DD1 is scared of all bugs. DD2 is scared of most Halloween looking things I guess. She wasn't too thrilled about clowns when she saw them and there was a part on the Opening Ceremonies where the kids were dreaming or whatever that she was freaked out about. Other than that if she sees her older sister react she will react the same way too.
Sharon- DD1 wants so bad to watch Grimm with me...she loves that type of creepy looking stuff...it would explain why one of her fave holidays is Halloween!

Me too! And I had the same problem as a kid that he is having - when I saw something scary the image would just stick with me and I would keep seeing it all the time. Actually that still happens to me sometimes - I just avoid scary stuff for the most part and I'm not as sensitive as I was as a kid. But it totally makes sense now how he is hiding under his covers and freaking out.
What are they thinking!?!?! I can't believe they are showing that horror during the day, on something that families watch together. It makes me so mad. And I guess glad we usually don't watch. But I'd like my kid to be able to watch the Olympics every 2 years without having horror images forced on him.

I haven't seen those commercials during Olympics but honestly haven't had as much time to watch them as I would like.....but I have seen it before. I get really freaked out from psychological thrillers and incorporate them into my dreams which means I don't sleep....so I have to avoid them and if I do watch I need to make sure it is when DH is around. Poor Ian....that show is so creepy looking....hope that now that he named the fear and you and Tina can talk to him about it, it will subside some
