How old was your dd when you got their ears pierced? My dd was talking almost all day the other day that she wants her ears pierced. Fine. I tried to explain what they will do and what we will have to do w/ her ears/earrings after she gets them pierced.
My dd is currently 5 1/2. I wanted to do it next week when we are on our staycation or for her b-day, but we already have her present.
Anything I or she should know? ALso, where did you get your dd's ears pierced?
Thanks much.

She needs to be old enough to take care of them herself. I waited until my Dd was 10.

What lc said. I didn't get mine done until I was 13. I will allow my children to do theirs in middle school as long as they are finally not arguing about bathing. My 7yo doesn't even brush her hair without my telling her, so she won't be able to take care of her ears.

We did DD1's when she was 18 months old. She loves them. I had mine done in kindergarten. DH wants to do DD2's ears around the same age as we did DD1's ears.

I got the boys ears peirced last year for their bdays. They where 7 and 9 yrs at the time. They where old enough to pretty much take care of them themselves with some reminders and things from me.
We got them done at Walmart and it turns out the boys have sensitive ears like me and it took a really long time for them to heal. I suggest getting earings that are 10/14k gold plated at least to cut down on any problems. I know they sell a whole set of them at Walmart for $20. I wish I would have done this right away. Plus there they say if you buy the earings they will peirce them for free.

neosporin! Thanks Vic I never even considered putting that on the boys ears and Cody's where looking pretty red last week I just had him keep them out awhile long. I will have to try that!
Also if you do decide to do it don't get studs that are super small when I was younger I had my ears peirced at about 5yo and I was turning them like they told me and turned the stud right into my ear and had to go to the ER to get it removed.

I was 12. DD got hers at 5.5. DH insisted. I wanted to wait until she could take care of her ears herself. We got through 8 to 10 weeks and then she got a vicious infection. It turned out to be impetigo (a very contagious rash) I would have waited if it were up to me.

I think I was between 10 or 12 before I got mine. If you feel that your DD can take care of it properly by herself then go for it! And personally I would go to a professional vs a person at a mall. It's more sterile, in my experience hurts less, and they obviously have more training.

I agree with jrosecarsc. Don't go to the mall!!! Piercing guns are much more painful, cause more damage to the tissue and aren't very sterile. The girls doing it don't have any training other than "line it up and pull the trigger".

All 3 got them done between 7-8 months old and I wouldn't have done it any differently. Make sure there are 2 people there to do them at the same time otherwise she may end up only having 1 done. We used Claire's and Walmart, didn't have issues at either place.

DH decided that age 3 was the earliest our girls could get their ears pierced and so that's why we've done. DD1 and DD2 were both 3 1/2 when they decided to get theirs done and DD3 is chomping at the bit to get hers done on her birthday next month. We'll see if she actually wants to once she is finally able to, though.

I was around 10 when I got mine done. My DD who is 7 has been mentioning from time to time that she's considering it. Her best friend, also 7, just had hers done and has had no problems with keeping them clean and turning them etc. My DD wanted to know what it feels like, and I told her that it kind of feels like when she gets a shot at the doctor's office. That way she knows what it's going to feel like and won't be surprised. So far the dread of the piercing part of it is overriding her desire to wear earrings! So we'll see when that switches and wanting the earrings trumps the worry about the discomfort.
