When do you keep you're kiddos home from school? DD1 has a yucky cold. Her sore throat is gone. Just chapped lips, cheeks and a really stuffy nose...a small cough also! Got me thinking...when do you keep kids home from school? Do you send them when they have a full blown cold or keep them home? The school told us if they are puking within 24 hours keep them home...at least thats all the info my DH gave me because he's the one who went to orientation! First time preschool mom and I'm clueless lol! Thanks!

If they throw up or have a fever I keep them home, they can't go back for 24 hours after the fever breaks or the end of puking by school rules anyhow. If they are acting not like themselves, pretty lethargic, I will keep them home. My daughter had pink eye... had to bring her to the doctor to clear that one up, takes a day before they can be sent back for that. If my son is having a really bad asthma attack, I'll keep him home in hopes of not having to bring him to the er, otherwise if it's manageable with one dose of meds at school, he'll go then too.
Otherwise, I'll send them to school. The weren't there often enough to get good attendance awards last year.

I send mine to school unless they can't make it through the day. The 1st grader stayed home one day last year because he had the runs and there was no way he could get to the bathroom in time. If they have a cold/cough/runny nose they still go to school. The 6 yr old tends to get longer lasting colds, if he stayed home he would be home more days then he went to school (I think his meds effect his colds and they tend to be sinus issues). If they had a fever or was sick puking I would wait 24 hours for them to go back to school.

I only keep mine home if there is fever, diarrhea, vomit. Colds he still goes. He knows he can always go to the health office and let her decided if he needs to be sent home or not.

Good to know...thanks ladies!!! She is feeling a lot better then she was yesterday so she'll be going to school and I guess I can't keep her in every time she has a cold! I just didn't want to send her and get questioned as to why she was there!

Yeah I agree with the others. Though when you send them with a cold the teachers might be upset, they always are with me anyway. But you can't keep them home for every little thing....

The teachers and the principal keep telling us how important it is for them to attend as many days as possible so they don't miss out on any schoolwork. I've seen kids pretty sick sent to school and the nurse ends up having to send many home during the peak season, especially when the fever reducer wears off...

I'm not afraid to keep them home for colds if they are really out of sorts or they are so stuffed up they can't even function. I will keep them home for the usual fever, vomit, diarrhea and any of the contagious things the school says to keep them home for. I'm also not afraid to keep them home for a personal day to just have a day to recoup! Some kids just need a day off just like us adults.

I could have written lilmermaid's post. School is important but NOT always top priority--happy, healthy, well-adjusted were my goals.

I agree -- after the typical guidelines of waiting 24 hours past fever, puking etc. I usually just see how my kid is acting. If she's lethargic and tired and not herself, I'll probably keep her home. If she's bouncing back and acting normal but is just stuffy with a little cough, I'd send her.

If it's a licensed preschool they should have a set policy on when they need to be home that follows state guidelines. Colds don't generally qualify by themselves so long as they are able to participate in a typical day. If they are lethargic or feel too ill to participate regularly, or their nose is so bad that it cannot possibly be kept clean for any period of time, then they likely should be home.
But, as I always tell our preschool parents, if they stayed home for every cold we'd have no kids for a portion of the year!

DS' preschool didn't want us to send them if they even had a runny nose.. Fortunately he has his dads immune system so he rarely ever gets sick, but I would keep him home if he threw up or had a fever.
Since he goes to school while I'm working I can't keep him home everytime he has a cold or I'd get fired for missing too much work.

To me this is a tough one. B/c ds has bad allergies, asthma and at least 2X a year he gets miserable so I am torn on whether I should or shouldn't send him to school or not. Kind of like the 2nd week of school this year he was miserable b/c of his allergies/asthma and he was getting bloody nose at school he got 2 then got another one I ended up getting him from school we chose to pick him up b/c we didn't think he would learn anything if he kept going to the nurses office for his nose came home and it stopped.
