I hate the dentist and I have a nice one for many years now. When I was a young kid I had a dentist I disliked. I do go to the dentist and I have bad teeth b/c I don't take very good care of them that is no secret that is why I have had several cavities, had teeth pulled and no have a denture on the bottom.
I guess my main question is: What do you do if you have a fear of dentists?
(I always get my nerves get the best of me...shake, get very chilly, heart beats fast).
I have sensitive teeth, gums. The gal suggested for me to use headphones, but I still can hear what they do and that doesn't help the situation either.
Thanks much.

I dislike going to the dentist d/t a bad experience in high school with wisdom teeth removal and cavity filling. What I found out as an adult was if it hurts to have cavities filled you are not properly numbed, raise your hand and ask for more novocaine. Your dentist wants you to be comfortable so talk to him/her about your fears, help them figure it out with you.
To help myself I take deep breaths, remind myself it will be over soon. I have become almost obsessed w/ flossing which cuts down on the pain at visits, b/c there is less plaque to scrape.
My brother is a dentist and he strives to help his patients have a positive relationship with him, talking through their fears and concerns and explaining why he needs to do what he needs to do. Make sure you get what you need from your dentist.

Thanks Dara.
I know my dentist (male) cares about me or his patients. He has talked to me & my dh about my teeth/mouth. I do raise my hand if something hurts. I usually ask for a blanket and they usually go slow when they work on me.

I used to hate going to the dentist too...infact I didn't go for MANY years. Now married, I go on a regular basis. I've had 5 cavities filled and 4 wisdom teeth out. Even though it was scary, it was about the health of my body, and my mouth. Sometimes doing things you don't enjoy or may even have a fear of, teaches your child that there are things in life that you do, even though it's scary.....I think it's a good lesson for DD.
Yes- I am a little afraid of the dentist, but you have to take care of your teeth if you don't want cavaties...ect.....

I also have horrible teeth, and dislike going to the dentist because I know I will have to have work done. However, I feel lucky that at this point I still have all my own teeth, besides the 3 root canals and crows I've had and many fillings. I always ask for laughing gas. It makes things so much better.

I wasn't exactly too thrilled about going to dentists either but after I felt that horrible root canal pain and eventually loss of the darn tooth it doesn't bother me anymore...I actually LOVE to get my teeth cleaned. After learning what tooth infections can do to not just your mouth but your body I wasn't afraid anymore! I had a bad time remembering to brush before bed and floss...laziness got the best of me and I just wanted to go to bed! Now I can't go to bed without doing it because I really don't want to feel teeth pain again....ever.
Maybe doing some research on teeth and infections will help you get over your fear some? If anything how about laughing gas? That stuff is great at relaxing!

I have novacaine whenever I get cavities filled, root canals done, crowns done.
Is laughing gas the same as novacaine???

No laughing gas doesn't numb you it helps you relax! Kind of like that happy buzz you get after a couple drinks. I honestly probably could of gone to sleep with it haha.

Just make sure you call ahead and ask first to make sure they have it and to see how much it will cost you. Unfortunately it's not free.

I go to the dentist every six months and am terrified. Even though I brush and floss like crazy I still have cavities every time and still have gum disease. It is sooooo frustrating. I recently bought a water flosser so I am hoping it helps. The reason I hate the dentistso much is my gag reflex. It's is beyond bad. I am even more scared not to go though because my dental health terrifies me. Can't wait to be able to afford a deep clean for the gum disease so I can stop being in pain. By the way bad teeth a d gums run in my family like crazy, it's no surprise no matter what I do I have horrible teeth :-(
