As a retail worker, I don't HATE black Friday, but I don't work it either. My place of employment IS open on Thanksgiving, (at 4 pm) and I agree with all the above posts, that it is a day for family. I personally REFUSE to work on Thanksgiving, and luckily for us, it's optional. We have 17 employee's working that night. I don't think it's fair for the managment being FORCED into working. But Coorprate supplies a meal for all employees working that day.
I do not go out early to shop. If I get out, I do. But its not a priority for me.

I don't like that those employers are making those kids work on Thanksgiving. And it's not just when they open, they have be there late on Weds to set up and early on Thursday so no family time for them. It shows that Target and Walmart aren't really family friendly. There isn't anything I want bad enough to ruin my Thanksgiving.

I've done Black Friday with my mom and had a hoot! We went for the deals and to spend time with each other. As long as we keep our humor about the insanity of it all it's a great tradition. Sales on Thursday however are just rediculous. My husband works in the retail world and I don't want him to have to work on Thanksgiving.

I used to hate working thanksgiving... I worked in a movie theatre in NY when I was younger. Christmas Day too. The only plus, was I got double time pay.

My mom and I have gone out Black Friday shopping a few times now. We used to just go randomly in the afternoon but last year we started at midnight. It was actually a lot of fun and we were done and back home early enough for the guys to go out fishing in the morning. I think that it's terrible that the stores are starting Thanksgiving evening because I think that it isn't fair to the employees. They'll have to be there to get everything set up and miss Thanksgiving dinner with their own families. NOT FAIR! I know that most people who work retail HATE Black Friday. I know that I didnt' care for it and I just worked at bridal shops and we kept our regualr hours and sales. (Maybe I just wished that I could be out shopping, I dont' remember! LOL!) Not to sound snotty it what do you think those who had to be there at midnight do? I worked at midnight last year and tried to go to bed but couldn't so I ended up being awake for 30 hours before I was able to sleep. It ruined our Friday which was my only day off that week. I know it won't change and we are moving in the direction of being open every day of the year. But I would almost rather that than the crazy hours.

Kmart is open all day on Thanksgiving and both Coborn's and Cub will be open in the morning (until 4pm?).
What do you think about the striking Walmart workers? Jeez for $13 an hour, I'd go back to work there! I don't know many that work well enough for $13 an hour, I hardly get a grunt out of most Walmart workers. Seems like I'm an imposition on their day most of the time. I really doubt they'll get that wage, there are so many people out there willing to work for minimum wage.
I think that when we go to being open all the time it won't be as big of a deal. Just 50 years ago, you wouldn't be able to find a store open after 8pm and you'd rarely see one open on Sunday. Now we're used to 24/7.

I was talking about this with my DH and I have changed my view on store opening on Thanksgiving! If you don't want to work on Thanksgiving than don't work retail! How many other people are working on Thanksgiving?!?! Police, Fire, Hospital workers, EMT's, Hotel staff, movie theater workers, gas stations, street crews for bad weather and let's not forget the men and women fighting for our freedom! Really puts things into perspective for me!

My husband worked all the holidays when he was a projectionist.
I'd hate to think that the er workers would have the day off, we had to bring our son in on Christmas day last year.
I heard that many of the people striking weren't even employees, they were hired by the union to stand out there and picket. They're usually paid $10 an hour to picket.

While I understand where some of you are coming from in regards to lots of professions requiring work on holidays as I work in group homes for people with disabilities and have spent many holidays working/on-call and my parents are pastors so they work every Christmas Eve and lots of other holidays (and really whenever someone from their congregation needs them), I firmly believe that retailers are just being greedy by opening stores like Target, WalMart, etc on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, people who work retail should be thankful for having a job, everyone with a job should be thankful for that. But, I believe that there is more to this holiday than sales, a lot more. I have not set foot in a store since Tuesday, instead I have spent the holiday and long weekend with my family and friends. I am tired of how commercialized Christmas has become. I understand retailers count on this season for their business and I will buy gifts at stores like Target and Kohls, I just feel like retailers forget that the real reason for Thanksgiving is to give thanks for what we have. I wish the retailers would just let us give thanks and wait their turn. Black Friday is soon enough.
