So, we met with a pediatric urologist yesterday, and DD1 needs to have the valve in her left kidney rebuilt. We found out she had reflux in her left kidney last year when she was hospitalized after getting her first ever UTI. When they re-did the test, the reflux was worse. The dr said that if she hasn't grown out of it by nowhe won't ever grow out of it. Also, every time she gets a UTI, it damages the kidney, plus we gotta rush her in and get antibiotics if she gets even the slightest symptom.
The dr said she has had this since my first trimester of pregnancy. While it will be nice to not have to worry about it anymore, the surgery is 95+ %effective, we still gotta get through a surgery. She will be going in sometime in January, and she will have to miss a couple days of school.

Smooth surgery wishes headed your direction. Sounds like this is the first major illness/surgery you have gone through with your kids. It is scary and can be overwhelming.
Childrens' hospitals or clinics usually do a really good job of walking you through every step and teaching her about what will happen. DS1 had surgery at Children's Hospital West on 62 & 494 and at Gillette in St. Paul. Both experiences were smooth and everyone was so nice and helpful.
It will be good to have it fixed and not have to worry about it anymore.

My BFF's DD2 had this procedure a few years ago and it went as smooth as could be and she's had no side effects or anything since. Hope that's reassuring! My DD1 had two hernias repaired at Children's about three years ago and they were great--explained everything to her (and us) very clearly, had a coloring book for her to draw in that talked about it, they just made it as easy on all of us as possible. I was worried about the morning of the surgery when DD1 couldn't eat anything but she handled that fine. For me, the scariest part was when I was holding her and they started the anesthesia--she just went limp in my arms and I wasn't prepared for that part, it was hard on me emotionally although I tried not to show it. So my advice would be to know that for YOU that will be the hardest part and to just kind of brace yourself for when she goes under and know she's in good hands.

DD2 was born with an abnormal kidney. She was on meds at 4 days old because they thought she would have reflux. She had a VCUG to show no reflux then had another at 1 year. That showed no reflux. During my pregnancy no one told us it wouldn't be life threatening so it was a stressful time. We had some friends whose DD had just had a transplant so that was in the front of our minds. She also had hernia surgery at Children's last year. It went very well. One thing that really helped set me at ease was the orientation night. They walk you and your child through EVERYTHING that will happen. Show all the rooms where the kids will go. What the masks look like and what is on their hand for the IV. I highly recommend going to it!!!! Good vibes for when the time comes!

I understand how stressful and scary this whole process is for you. You never want the knowledge that something is going wrong with your child causing them to be in pain or not feel like their normal selves. I have no doubt she will get through this surgery fine and then she can be a very happy healthy little girl.
