I would love some recommendations for Ian. Finding books for him is proving a tough needle to thread these days.
He seems to like books geared at mid to upper elementary. He loves fantasy (fairies, dragons etc), historical fiction, stories about animals, and non-fiction. He is pretty easily scared. He often begins a series and then soon finds it too scary to continue (How To Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter, Guardians of Ga'Hoole, etc). He at times reads some of the series aimed at younger kids (Magic Treehouse, Flat Stanley, the one about the hamster, etc) but seems to get quickly bored with them.
I'm thinking book series more aimed at mid to upper elementary girls might be the way to go for now. He LOVES the AG books of course. He loved the Little House series. I feel like there was a fairy series he found at the library once but I can't remember what it was.
I'd love some ideas. Especially of series he can get into.

My kids like to read the Fly Guy series, although that is lower elementary geared. How about the 'A to Z mysteries', 'Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot' series. My daughter really likes the 'The Teacher From the Black Lagoon' books (there's more than just teachers at the Black Lagoon). 'Captain Underpants'.
I think there's some rainbow fairies in a series, I just tossed the latest book order form or I could come up with more. Perhaps I can ask the librarian on Wednesday.

Thank you both. He's read some of those, but that does give me a few more to suggest to him. I appreciate it!

I remember really liking the book: Caddie Woodlawn (historical if I remember correctly set in WI).
Also the Boxcar Children series, Judy Blume books, Choose Your own Adventure (not sure if you can still find them, but my brothers and I loved them in elementary school).

My son who is 9, loves the author Rick Riordan, he has several series out, the Percy Jackson & the Olympians, the Heroes of Olympus and the Kane Chronicles. The Percy Jackson series I believe has 5 books and I believe the other 2 series will have about the same, I can't remember if they are all out yet in the other 2 series. You can look them up on his website and it will give you a better idea if they would be of interest to your son. The other series he is just starting is 39 Clues.

I also remember loving the babysitters club... old school but loved them I think that was almost all I read when I was in 3rd-8th grade. My mom has the whole series in her basement still.

I've seen the 'choose your own adventure' at the local library and at second hand stores.

The Rainbow Magic series by Daisy Meadows. There are series for The Rainbow Fairies, The Weather Fairies, The Jewel Fairies, The Pet Fairies, The Fun Day Fairies, The Petal Fairies, and there are also "Special Editions." The books are all the name and type of fairy, like "Stella the Star Fairy." Also, Lauren Myracle writes the Flower Power series which DD1 also really enjoys. E.B. White books are always popular here- The Trumpet of the Swan, Charlotte's Web, and Stuart Little. The Wizard of Oz series is good- though Ian may be too frightened by it sometimes.

i would second the chronicles of narnia (there can be lots of Christian undertones and symbolism, but there is also fantasy and mythical creatures and such). Little house on the prairie series choose your own adventure series wrinkle in time (there are 4 total in the series)-- somewhat fantasy/theoretical type my daughter loves diary of a wimpy kids series and one like it-- James patterson just started a middle school series like that too Judy Blume books, beverly cleary books, just to name a few of my faves
