Has he read the Nancy Drew Mysteries? Or one of my favorites (which DS1 is currently reading) is Where the Redfern Grows.

Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys (I think that is the boy series) -- This might be too easy - Ramona Quimby series; Judy Blume (Blum books?). Some serious adult themes in some of her books for kids that are a little too intense for some kids at too young of an age when they can read it but don't get it or it really bums them out. I loved them as a kid -- but some of my friends couldn't stand it as they were not always "happy go lucky books with happy ending". I think there is one, "Are you there God.... it's me something or other." That one had a profound effect on me as a child.

My boys are getting the Diary of a Wimpy kid books for xmas. I also want to get them the Narnia series. We have tons of Boxcar Children books and you can get them super cheap at Half Priced Books.
I have seen these really cool books about Dragons and Fairies but I can't for the life of me remember the names of them!

The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes DD1 also likes Avatar the Airbender books. I get most of her books at the thrift stores. She is currently in love with the Full House books since they have been watching reruns on TV!

Thanks everyone! Lots of great ideas. He LOVED the Little House series and Wrinkle in Time. He was luke warm on Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing. He read all the Ramona books and loved those.
I added a bunch of the stuff above that he has NOT read to his Goodreads.
I remember loving the Narnia books. I never got the Christian symbolism - I'm sure it just went over my head because I didn't know enough about Christianity to get it. So that doesn't concern me. But I'm trying to remember how scary they are. It's hard to predict, I'm finding, what he finds "scary." And since he's pretty anxious at the moment I'm trying to play it safe.
He started the A to Z mysteries tonight and seemed to be enjoying that.

Sharon- I am Christian and never got the Christian symbolism of the Narnia chronicles (especially as a 10 yo reading it) ---I think they are a good read for anyone, but it might need to wait a bit for the "scary" factor
