My brother just emailed this morning that he is not coming home for Christmas. I am so bummed He had promised all of us he would come back this year back in August, but never booked a flight. He started looking last month and they were in the $700s. Now they are $870 and he doesn't feel he can justify the expense plus $350 for dog care while he is gone. I am frustrated that he didn't book at ticket 3 months ago, but mostly just really bummed. It means he will spend Christmas alone and that makes me sad. It means at least 9 months since I saw him last until he will come back. The other bummer is all the options he listed to come home in Jan/Feb don't work for our family (not things we can reschedule). Ugh, I just want to cry. I miss him so much and wish he still lived in MN (or that I had $$ to fly and see him - stupid ex-wife making him want to move so he didn't run into her anymore!). DS is going to be bummed too (though I am sure he'll get over it once he opens gifts). Thanks for letting me get that out.

I TOTALLY get where you're coming from!! My BIL promised he'd come up from Chicago last Christmas - even told my DD he'd be here. Then he flaked and we didn't hear from him for a couple months, not even to cancel his plans with us. My husband and DD were pretty bummed about his lack of follow through. Living out of state from family sure can suck sometimes.

Is there any way that your family could pitch in and still fly him up here?

That sucks! Living states away from family isn't fun at all when it comes to planning things.

I thought about that Apryll - but really my brother has plenty of money, he is just very thrifty (actually he's cheap) and so doesn't want to spend an extra $400-700 to come home at Christmas. I would love to chip in but don't have the funds and my other brother and his wife are expecting a baby soon and have to pay a lot for insurance (like a $2000/month premium) for the next few months.

That's really hard Fortunately for me my family all lives in MN.. unfortunately they live in Duluth and the only day I have off work is Christmas day so it's too much of a drive to go there and back in one day :/

Hmm, too bad he can't take Amtrak/ train or get here another way. Has he checked into that?

Where does he live? Has he considered Greyhound? I took a greyhound from IL to MN once.. it wasn't the most comfortable but it was cheap!

My brother lives in Portland, OR. Plane tix are always expensive (around $500). There is a train but it takes 36 hrs, so not really worth it with the time he can take off (he's an account so he has year end stuff).
It is always hard when people are away from family. Hopefully some friends will invite him to celebrate so he is not alone.

This bums me out, too. My brother being home this Thanksgiving was the first time in 7 years. Maybe you guys can Skype with him! That's what we do. I know it isn't the same, but it's still like he's there with you and you with him.
