My DD 1 & 2 just had their dental check ups and they asked me about DD3, if she had been in yet. I said that she was only 16 months and I was thinking more like 2 yrs old to bring her in. They said nope, they highly recommend first year, first visit. They don't do much in regards to cleaning, just counting and looking for problems. They told me they are seeing more and more kids under 2 years with cavities already...WOW! I highly recommend Riverdale Pediatric Dentistry in Coon Rapids. They remodeled recently and it's amazing! They even have iPads for the kids to play on while they wait!!!! They are very kid friendly.

Our dentist said to wait until he would be old enough to actually open his mouth and let them examine and clean. He went right before turning 4 and did great, but I don't think he would have done well before that b/c dr. visits were a struggle for awhile. He has really matured in the past year.
We do have the advantage that my brother is a dentist and did the counting and visual checks just when we visited. But we don't have dental insurance for DS (wayyyyy too expensive to add him) - we can get free work from my brother if something major came up. My brother also gave DS a kids Sonicare at 2 1/2 and we started flossing around 3.

I just took my 3 year old DS for his first check-up. His dentist recommended waiting until then since he is not a candy/junk food/sweets eater, but she did say they see cavities much younger now.

That's great Dara! That could be why they are seeing cavities younger due to bad nutrition.
