Is it normal for a preschool to not have locked doors? We registered P for preschool that is in a church... the main doors to the preschool are left unlocked all the time (this isnot main enterance to church) and I was told that the cost is too much for them to get them locked all the time (I'm assuming new doors would be in order). This realllly concerns my hubby. We've already paid the registration fee... and i like the teacher he'll be having.. and the routine and hours are great for us.
I know situations like Newtown are isolated in general, but for young kids.. I thought it would be standard to keep doors locked.

Do they have a desk right at the doors so they can monitor who is coming and going?
Seems weird to me.

DS goes to preschool at a school. During the school day you have to go through the secretary/prinicpal's office area, for pick-up after 3p the doors are open. The door to his classroom is unlocked.
I don't think this is unusual to be honest.

you walk in and there is a foyer.... small set of stairs that go up then a set that go down.... the directors office is at the top of the steps with one classroom up and some down and one in the foyer. THe kids get signed in and out in their classrooms. The doors to the classrooms lock automatically when shut. This is the same program that ALipski's dd was in... and htey loved it. I've heard nothing but good things.
I remember when I taught in a preschool... the main doors were always open (church)... then a lot of times the classroom doors were open too depending on the age of the kids. THough back then, violence in schools wasn't as much of an issue.

Not unusual especially if it's at a church! Our preschool is also at a church but they only have 2 doors. 1 for the office and preschool and 1 for the worship center. The worship center door is only open when events are going on....funerals, MOPS on Thursdays, etc.

Yeah, I'm not seeing it as too unusual either. Sorry, hon!

At DD1s school they just lock the classroom doors when class is going on. The main doors stay unlocked because of all the different class times and parents walking in and out all the time!

Security is part of why we picked the elementary school for DS for next year, so I understand your DH's concerns, but I also remind myself two things:
1) The vast majority of the time we send our kids to school and all is well. As much as any tragedy is scary, horrific, heartbreaking, etc. The risk is really very, very small.
2) We cannot protect our children from everything bad in the world. We do our best to make safe decisions for them. Finding a school that is a safe, positive learning experience is one of those decisions, but it sounds like the school is on par with how most schools are set up to be secured.

We go to preschool at a church, and the doors are not locked there. It never bothered me, but that's because it has a very "small town" feel where the teachers and staff know the parents. They always ask for ID if someone comes to pick up a child, and that person has to have pre-written approval in order to pick up the kids etc. So it's pretty regulated, even with the unlocked doors issue. I've never felt like the school is vulnerable or anything thanks to the super-vigilant staff. But I understand your question totally!

Its comforting that that seems to be normal. We like the staff there and the curriculum and P loved the classroom and his teacher... its small town feel here too, out of the way... I'm dreading looking for kindergartens

DD1's preschool happens to be a k-8 private school that also does preschool, so the doors are locked. I am sending DD1 to the district for kindergarten, can't afford tuition for private school. Plus, the district can handle her ADHD and ODD better.
