What do you think about school/ parent group fundraising. I truly feel there is a need for fundraising and alternative programs in public schools. BUT some individuals have opposed me in this area. They feel that the majority of our schools are already sufficiently funded in terms of essentials. I HATE gift wrapping, candy, greeting card fundraisers...but they appear to be a necessary evil.
For those of you who are acquainted with booster clubs and parent groups what are your opinions? Are these programs purposeful? Do you feel the funds are used in a meaningful way? Where do you feel we have opportunity to grow?

Welcome to MoM's I'm the PTA Secetary for my oldest boy's school. We do a couple of fundraiser's each year by selling items such as chocolate, cookie dough, gift wrap, etc. These fundraisers don't bring in a ton of money, maybe a couple grand. One of our big fundraisers is the fall carnival we put on. Yes it is alot of work but it makes alot of money. The funds we raise are put right back into the school by way of: each teacher gets so much money per student for supplies, we have purchassed SMART boards for all the classrooms, transportation for field trips as well as teacher appreciation and student appreciation items.

I'm not involved with the PTA but one thing I really love as a parent is that our school has partnered with our local Papa Murphy's pizza store. They have a monthly fundraiser where $2 for every large and $3 for every family size pizza purchased at regular price is donated to the school. It's something I don't mind doing since we love their pizzas and tend to go there 1-3 times a month anyways.
We also have a huge carnival and a family dance. This year at the dance they did a silent auction. It was a huge success! The staff donated their talents and parents bid on them. We also had some donated bigger items like a Viking jersey!!!! Our carnival also does a basket silent auction. Every grade has a theme and you donate items and people put together baskets to bid on.
Our Art teacher does a fundraiser too. It's called Square 1 Art. Each child creates a project and then it can me made into all sorts of things. Mugs, blankets, magnets, puzzles, key chains, etc.
They also so the cookie dough and wrapping paper fundraiser.
I just like the variety of ways we can support our school. There is something for everyone, no matter your income level!
I do feel it's very important to have these fundraisers with all the cuts to education! Our funds are used very appropriately....SMART boards, iPads, more technology items, field trips, and so much more.

Frustrating. Annoying. Necessary. Our elementary schools did read-a-thons, silent/live auction, walk-a-thon. Junior high sold magazines (HATED THAT) Senior high was activity/sport based. Since my kids weren't in many of those, I lucked out!

I'm the PTA secretary for my DD's school this year. We don't do the traditional fundraisers going door to door. We bank on a couple big events throughout the year and work with what we get. Right now we're busy planning our annual silent auction. This spring will be a plant sale with delivery just in time for mothers day.
I don't know about other schools but for us, being an arts infused school, the fundraising is necessary to keep the arts in our school.

WE generally has cookie dough, frozen soup, etc and wrapping paper fundraiser, but each school (of the 3 elementary in district) do a carnival (one fall, winter and spring). They have games where you win tickets for prizes or little items you get when you play, sell hamb, hot dog, face painting, a few art things (sand art and/or craft item) and raffle for classroom theme based gift baskets. The money is used for field trips and classrom items. ALso they collect soup labels and box tops for education-- not sure how much that brings in-- I think few hundred to thousand bucks maybe?

Ugh, I hate traditional fundraisers. I almost never participated while growing up and my girls really don't either. I hate asking people to buy way overpriced items- food, gift wrap, cookie dough, ect. I REALLY hate being asked to buy it. I'd rather just GIVE money directly to the school or donate items for the Carnivals and Gift Basket Auctions.

My boys school stopped doing fundraisers for a few years because of the economy. Last year we started again and they sold those butter braids. I know they plan to do it again next year but I think they are over priced and not very good in my opinion.
We have also started thinking about fundraising in terms of things we remember doing as kids. Like the carnations you could send to classmates or teachers with a little note. So we are doing that this year and it's lots of fun.
The big fundraiser is March Madness. They have differant theme baskets that include donated items from the community or parents. You buy raffle tickets and try and win them. The school also gets donated use of a popcorn & snowcone machine. Right now they do a basketball game between the older kids and the teachers but I would like to seem them do a carnival theme to include all the kids/parents that come and stop people from leaving right after the drawing.
